I need to make a tighter fitting trim ring, but here's my kenwood flushed into the dash:

Here it is with a stock faceplate sitting over it:

WHOA JIM!

are you gonna make it so the stock face plate covers it up like that? if you could make it sorta swivel or hinge on one side, that would be sooo trick!

how did you take off the stock face?? and can you just put it back on (or it the stock radio forever defaced??

mine looks very much like jims, i just need to get pics. imitation is the best form of flatery, dont ya think? it did require some work, but it really helps with the stealth look. when i go to do the 4th gen dash (hopefully this summer), i'm gonna take it a step further. mount the deck in the dash w/o the face (remotely mounted or just not at all), and line up the cd slot on the aftermarket deck and the factory face. no panel to remove and will look as stock as possible. but right now, its just a dream......

Where do you guys find those flush mounting kits? I haven't been able to find one anywhere. Everyone keeps telling me the only way kit they have makes it stick out.

The stock faceplate just sets in place. I didn't want it hinged because I never take the car to areas where theft could be an issue, so it spends most of its time in the glove box, unless I'm at a show or something. That's the faceplate from my old firebird though... I've still got to hack up a Camaro radio when I get time.

I bought a flush-mount kit from sounddomain.com. It only cost me $6.95 and it is a nice quality piece. I believe it was the Scosche, but I don't remember. I flushed my denon cd player into it, walked over to my Jimmy and realized that POS has even less radio depth than the thirdgens.

go to the website I left and the part# you want is GM1516

they are for camaro's.
you will have to cut your heater ducts and the factory radio metal thingy with the hole in it...just cut the top part off....not the whole thing...behind the radio for it to flush mount, just put the system in and line it up and mark it with a sharpie or something then cut it out with a roto zip tool....easiest way...then I guess you could block off the duct work so heat wont be blasting into you HU....I dont use the lower heat that much so its not an issue with me...

That metal bracket can easily be unbolted instead of cutting it.

I was going to unbolt it but I noticed that if you take it out, that seems to take away from the structure of the console...you know the flimsiness of it....either way will work fine though.....

so for flush mount.... you can't use the heater?! and is there no flush mount for the firebirds?? i was also thinking that the plastic trim on my firebird is not recessed like that. the radio sits behind the trim....so i dont see right away how i can do that with the stock radio face plate. hmmm...has anyone done that with a firebird???

FREEZE...what kit/where did you get it/how much?? i really liike the looks of that one...makes it look like it's part of the radio.

Every single install is going to look exactly the same if they just used an off the shelf mounting kit, so what's the fascination with seeing them all? It's the custom ones that I would expect you to be interrested in seeing, but there aren't a lot of people that do custom deck installs.

it seems like i have seen a few kits already on this post, and not two of them look at all alike. but, you're right, i did want to see custom jobs. i'm surprised more people don't have custom jobs, since i still dont really think that 1 din decks sticking way out of a hole where they look retrofitted look very good. doesnt look too clean to me. that's why i wanna see my options before buying a 1 din deck. (yes i know there are 1.5s, but i cant afford/dont want one)

and im not saying any of yours that you have posted already look bad, as a matter of fact they mostly look pretty good. JIM---yours is really my favorite, but i dont think i could do that with the old faceplate on my firebird trimplate

That deck and trim ring originally resided in my firebird.

JIM--i meant placing the factory face over the aftermarket stuff.....can that work with the firebird radio/hvac trim piece?? cause if my memory serves me correctly, my trim piece (the one like FREEZE's) actually overlaps/covers the edge of the radio face.

saw some cool stuff on that americna national website....what do you guys think of those kits that put an abs plastic pocket underneath the DIN radio?? looks damn factory good, but it says on the one for our cars that the pocket is about big enough for a CD jewel case.....that seems small enough to be useless.hahah

how about putting an equalizer in there with the radio??anyone done it? pics? ideas?

oh, and FREEZE---do you have any side view pics of yours...i wanna see how far it sticks out. thanks guys

hey JIM...i just reread you tech artlicle.....so tell me about flush mounting it in you trans am/gta. it didnt say anything about cutting the heating ducts (which someone mentioned earlier in this post). does flush mounting interfre with the function of the heater or anything else???
and do you have any pics of it in the other car???<--or were those other pictures it?? (do you have any pics with the firebird trimpiece, or did you have that one in your gta??)

I tried to get some pics of the new install but not good with flash.
To get an idea of how it looks, go to http://www.pioneer.com/
and do a find on DEH-P47DH.

It is a 1.5din (Crutchfields CG size).

It nicely fills the stock IROC bezel and looks good installed.

I ripped my console out, so to put mine in I had to make a piece of aluminum fit with a grinder/wire wheel/drill/wire brush/silicon/2 hours of work.

Looks good though, its just a shiny piece of aluminum with a head unit in it, nothing else (i.e. no A/C no nothing)

I would post a pic but my camera broke I need to buy a new one.

There are BEFORE pics here however, Before the head unit that is:

you notice I have a boost retard dial and stuff in the way.

i noticed today that different brand decks seem to be different thicknesses. some 10 inches, i think pioneer was about 8 3/4 in., kenwood(which i would prob. get) is like 9 13/16 in. anyone know the depth of the stock deck?? and i guess it is still too long, because the one jim flushed in the bird is kenwood.

JIM..where you at man? tell me about flushing it in the bird...do you have to mess with the heat ducts??

My camaro deck stock was 5 1/4 inches deep....reason I know is cause I just measured it so I wouldnt think the firebird wouldnt be that much different...

If you or a friend get Crutchfield magazine look in there, it will tell you depth of the reciever, front speakers, and rear speakers. I would tell you, but I dont have one on me right now.

In both the camaro and the firebird, the trim piece covers the edges of the stock radio. It is necessary to trim the faceplate down to fit into the trim opening.

JIM..where you at man? tell me about flushing it in the bird...do you have to mess with the heat ducts??
Sorry, I was busy having a life this weekend. I finally got a stereo put into my Jimmy. Anyway... I just described the install in detail last week, but apparently it wasn't in this thread. Anyway, in the firebird you need to make some modifications, but none that will impact any heat ducts. There's a plastic brace bolted to the back of the center console that needs to be modified. You'll have to cut away a lot of that brace, as well as to relocate 1 "L" shaped bracket that bolts to that brace and to a stud in the floor.

Keep in mind that my installation required a LOT of depth. Not only is my Kenwood deck a lot deeper than most other decks, but I mounted the deck almost an inch deeper than Deadtrend1's deck. The face of my deck was flush with the flat panel that Deadtrend1's deck is mounted to.
