What Does MDF Weigh In At?

Can anyone tell me what 3/4" MDF weighs for a given size? (i.e. 4' x 8' sheet = xxlbs.)

Yep, its heavy stuff.

There is some stuff called UltraLight MDF, its about a 1/3 as light, not quite as strong, and more $$$ naturally.

I'm not sure where you could find it though.....

Are you sure? Is it really that heavy!? I didn't think it was that heavy when I built my box..... I have almost 2 sheets of 3/4MDF in the back of my car (box, and amp-box)... wow, fiberglass is looking a whole lot better now...

im pretty sure its close to that weight like REZN8R says. remember, that is a 4 foot by 8 foot sheet of 3/4". im sure rez works with it enough to eventually get curious himself. i know that my boxes are around a half a sheet of mdf (a little less) and weigh in at 43-44 lbs give or take. i would trust that number to be at least close.

Hey Rezn8r,...

Now that I think about some of the boxes I've built out of Mdf, that sounds about right...

Rezn8r, Do you know how much a sheet of High / Heavy Density Fiberboard weighs? Just curious.

The Superlite MDF is made by GoldenEdge, here is a website:
www.nelsonpine.co.nz/products/superlitemdf.htm

I found a different manufacturer that claims 105lbs per sheet for 3/4", and 131lbs for 1".

As for high density, or hardboard, I've only seen that up to 1/4" thickness so I'm not sure.

I was talking to someone over the weekend that works with this stuff all the time... and he says that the weight of 4'X8' sheet of 3/4" can vary as much as 25LBS... He says he has averaged it out to .33oz per square inch of 3/4" MDF (1"X1"X3/4")

that puts a 4x8 sheet at about 98 lbs using alittle math if anyone was wondering.

I wish they would stop putting the MDF on the TOP shelf down at the lumber yard!
