How much does your sub box weigh?

I am asking because I am going to build a box for my 2 12's and want to know how much I should expect it to weigh.

I will probably use 3/4in plywood to build it. I would rather use something like MDF, but I hear that it is not cheap at all. I also hear that 3/4 in plywood stays firm enough for good clean bass anyways!
Feel free to correct me! I want to do this right the first time, but not go broke doing it!
The box will be 3.0 cu feet. It must be to get my desired sound out of my subs...

Thanks for the help!,
Daniel

Using 3/4" MDF, my sub box with 2 10s weighed 75 pounds.

Ply wood sucks. If you can't get MDF, at least use particle board. In my area MDF is $35 a sheet, and many on here have said they get it for as little as $15 a sheet, so I wouldn't let cost deter you. My MDF dual 12" box has a total airspace of 3.0 cubic feet and weighs exactly 62lbs without any speakers in it. I haven't weighed a particle board box yet, but I would guess that it weighs in the range of 35 to 45lbs.

Where would you buy MDF? at the local hardware store? I'm gonna go check it out later on this week.

If I can get it cheap, I'll go for MDF, but otherwise, particle board is callin my name! If not for the lower price, for the weight savings and not having to buy new rear springs to hold the box!

Thanks,
Daniel

My hardware store doesn't keep it in stock, but can have it within a couple days. Just go early in the week and you'll have it by the weekend. For the sake of 15lbs, I'd reccomend the MDF. Not only is it better acoustically, it's MUCH better to work with. No chips splinters and rough edges. It cuts like butter.

mine wighs 50lbs,just the box the particle wood is very thick,it is some kind of high density, not that flaky cheap ****, I'dont think it would affect suspension or speed performance too much, these cars are designed to carry a little extra wieght.you could compensate by keeping only one gallon of gas in the car at a time, but all that gas pumping would frustrate me after awhile.

Home Depot, Loews, and Payless Cashways all stock 3/4" MDF in 4'x8' sheets. Bring a truck along ans because it self serve, bring a freind. Its not fun trying to load a 4x8' sheet by yourself

I think my tube weighs like five pounds, or something. Something to think about.

Well, I have 2 Phoenix Gold 12's.... A box is the way to go!

My springs are by no means new. My car will more than likely sit a little lower, dont you think?

Thanks,
Daniel

The back of my car sat a little lower w/ my dual 15 box in it, but I never weighed the thing (about 80-90 lbs, loaded) please get the MDF, you'll be much happier. I had a box I built out of high density fiberboard explode once, it wasn't pretty.. (this box had one 10 in it, was completely sealed, and totally blew up, it was neat !)

None of the hardware stores around here stock MDF. I had to go down to the industrial park and get it from a cabinetmaker supplier. $25 for a 4'x8' sheet.

Actually, I just finished my box today. 4.4 cubic ft. all MDF by itself is 74lbs. Holds 2 12", 30lbs each.... look at those for some real wieght. Total cost for box = sheet and a half of MDF, $36, remote terminal, $6, time 9hrs, 4 ports, $2... think about it. $42 and a friend can go a long way. Flushmounted from the back to the seats. ONLY USE MDF

Ok I feel a little emabrassed i think my sub box weighs more than anyones...with my subs mine is probobly 120lbs but that is 5/8 MDF with 2 Competition Ground Zero Nuclear series in which both weigh 40lbs each. My car still sits the same though.
