car alarm
DEI is a well respected name in the industry, but you'll pay a little extra for the alarm just because of the name. Are plenty of other brands of alarms & remote starters around that will work in a thirdgen.
What really makes or breaks a car alarm is the quality of the install. Have seen some installs where the alarm brain falls out of the dash when the fuse box cover is removed. And others where the wires obstruct the movement of the gas & brake pedals. And yet others where mechanics have commented that they were suprised that the car had not caught fire and burned.
A thirdgen car alarm & remote start install guide is avaliable here:

it all comes down to the install and on a side note the viper line is very good quality. I install for a living and I definately recomend them. Just make sure that whoever installs the alarm knows what they are doing.

yep, the DEI kits are nice. see www.directed.com for details
Opinions on Autopage alarms? I got quoted yesterday for $179 installed for the 2600 model. Does this model have starter kill? I could save like $40 by going with Autopage instead of the Python 460 (I think that's the name.) Or does anybody know of a better model than the 2600? I looked on the AP website, and all they showed for alarms (in my price range) was the 310 and 410. The 310 looks good for me. So I am assuming the 2600 is an older style (that's why they don't show it on the website). I guess I'll just ask about the 310 when I go back to the stereo place. Overall, I would just like people's thought on the brand? Ease of operation? I know the install is the most important part, so I will make sure of that. Thanks! -89IRO

I have a viper 500+ and I love it. Two words for ya, voice module. There's nothing like hoping out of the car and hitting the alarm and hearing "viper arm". People in parking lots do a double take, it's great.
But really any DEI alarm is gonna be the same. They use the same sensors and everything, so really you're just paying for the name. If I'm not mistaken, I think viper was the first brand name they started selling under, so it's got the most name recognition.

That's why I am saving a ton of money going with Autopage. The guy at the stereo shop even told me he would throw in a hatch release for free if I buy the Autopage system. He says DEI costs his company a lot of money just because people want the "dei" brand. I just need help on deciding which autopage system to get. The 2600, 3500, or 310. -89IRO

As long as it comes with some kind of a warranty on it I think I'd be o.k. I would say the most basic features it needs to have are ignition kill and a dual stage shock sensor. I wouldn't get one of those alarms that's contained inside the siren and just makes noise. Beyond that it's just a matter of how many gadgets and gizmos you want. My friends alarm has a pager, remote start, remote trunk release, remote trunk pop, and a ton of other stuff. And although that's really cool, I don't know if it justifies the $500 price tag. So it's really just if money or features are important to you.
