amp not working?

ok so it sounded like my subs weren't working, so i decided to check the amp. there are 2 indicator lights, one says power, one says protected. the protected one is lit, but the power one is off (that would probably explain why the subs aren't working). i checked the fuse in the amp, and it's good, and if it wasn't getting a complete circuit, then the protected indicator light wouldn't come on, right? any ideas?

might help to say what amp you have..

also do you have it hooked up right to the head unit?
and also are the subs hooked up right?

Ok, the first thing you wanna do, is disconnect the subs, and the rca cables. If after that the thing still doesn't turn on, then it's fried. If it does come on, then you need to eliminate wether it's the rca's or the speakers. Try hooking each one up at different times.

it's some crappy 200 watt amp. it was in the car when i bought it, as were the subs (which are just as crappy, if not worse). but now that i have a little money, i built my own box, and im' getting new subs, but i wanted to keep the amp i have now until i have the time and money to get an amp that's actually worth buying. so i at least want this amp to work for a couple more weeks.

thanks for the ideas

ok i tried unplugging the rca's and the subs, and i turned on the stereo, and smoke started coming out of the amp. so i took it apart, and a couple resistors are fried. the only thing is now i can't read the color code. so i just ordered a pioneer amp and subs. thanks for the help though. maybe i'll post a picture of my trunk with the custom box and new amp sometime.
