I'm sure that I have mixed up the Pos and Neg wires once or twice in my time and never had a problem. Would speakers work, not work or what if the wires were mixed up??

easy test... hook up a 9 volt battery to the wires BRIEFLY!!!
WATCH SPEAKER AS YOU DO AND IF CONE MOVES TOWARD YOU, WIRING IS IN PHASE TO BATTERY.. IF CONE MOVES AWAY, THEN WIRES ARE BACKWARDS

If you blow your speakers from that test, then the speakers should be blown because they are about 5 - 8 watt speakers MAX, 9-volt batteries only put out 500mA or .5A which works out to 4.5 watts of speaker blowing power

In my experience, speakers cannot be blown from a 9-volt battery. Take from an installer who frequently has to double check factory speaker wiring. EVEN FACTORY SPEAKERS CANNOT BE BLOWN WITH A 9-VOLT BATTERY
