Using Dynomat with 6x9's

Here's my problem:

I got some Infinity 6x9's last summer and they have too much power. I had to cut some the foam out from the speaker well in order to get them to fit. The magnet was too big with the foam there. So after I got them to fit (with missing foam) now when the speakers play the sound echos through the whole inside of the sheet metal (between the outside metal and the inside wall) and it passes air throught the vents in my door jam. With every thing vibtating and air leaking it sounds not that great.

Here's my question:

Can I get some Dynomat and made a kind of box in the speaker well (just like the orginal foam) to keep the sound from flowing through the insides of the car.

Does that make sense, That dynomate isnt cheap so I dont want to buy a bunch if it wont work.

I looked at the my big electronics store (BEST BUY) and the high end audio stores (AUDIO KING) and that is the only brand they carry. There is accually 2 differnat "thickneses". Do you know the name of another company that makes them or a place to buy them.

So you guys think my plan would work. My concern would be how the product is installed. What i will have to do take a sheet and stick it to the outside metal than curve it to the in side metal. So the only spots where the dynamat will accually touch the car it the outside wall and the inside wall (the front and back of the "box" if looking at the speaker. The top, bottom , left and right sides wont accually be stuck to any thing. With the dynamat hold up.

That link had a 12 sg. foot rool for $36 of B-quiet Extreme.
That sounds like a deal to me.

check out crutchfield.com -- they have foam speaker baffles, which are cheap and may work for what you're looking to do.

brown bread

There is also a product called brown bread. Same thing as dynomat but I think it is a cheaper price. Not sure if it is available in the US but we can get it in Canada. Might want to check that out. :lala:

Ya they have the brown bread at the same link as above, If I remember they only sell it in huge rolls, I only need a few feet.

I'm going to try the foam baffles, that should stop the air from pounding in the sheet meatal chamber. And its alot cheaper, if that doesnt work well move to plan 2.

hey, save your money on the dynamat name. go to home depot/lowes/etc and pick up some peel and seal. same stuff, no name, muuuuch cheaper. comes out to about a $1/sq ft. check out the roofing department or the skylight area. great stuff.

so what is going to work better, the baffles or making a "box" out of the dynamay (or generic brand) material. Also somebody mentioned the spray foam, what do you guys think about that?

My car is in storage right now so I wont have a install update untill it gets out, sorry.

I've been to home depot asking for peel and seal and nobody's ever heard of it! I looked in the roofing section and found nothing. I've been to menards too and they havent heard of it either. I didnt check the "skylight area" so maybe I'll go back and look. Does anyone have a picture of this product?

I heard this stuff works great too, but I can find it

I used baffles on my 6x9's ever since ive owned a 3rdgen, keeps them nice and clean, dont really know if it improves sound though...

I think i felt a "increase" in sound because most of it was probably being forced into the car, rather than out the side like your talking about...

So they will hold up with the speaker and not "fall" apart. Are they made of a stiff foam??

like i said, the product is called peal and seel (not sure if thats the exact spelling, but you get my point). home depot and lowes do have it. i bought mine at lowes and i spoke to a guy at home depot who was buying some. at lowes, its in the roofing department, somewhere around where they keep the flashing and weatherguard-type stuff. at home depot, they keep it around the skylight area, not exactly sure the exact spot. usually goes for around $12.50 for a 12 1/2 sq ft roll. it is a small roll, so it is very easily passed over

3 Years later, only damage/wear is where the screw went through and left a hole, definately recommend them!

The stuff at home depot etc. is used to make ice dams on houses. It like felt paper with a sticky backing. Brand names will vary but thats what the product is for.
