Pioneer DEH-P86DHR head unit.
My question is how does this unit compare to newer ones? It was in the car when i bought it a few months ago... and have been wondering what other people's opinion was on this deck.. One thing i like about it is it is a direct fit (Din and a half) but i know it is atleast a few years old. Right now the car has Pioneer 6x9's but i'm not sure about the front speakers because they sound like crap. Other then that i think it sounds decent. But i just wanted to know what you guys think about it.

well, i've got a pioneer deh-47h (or whatever), which is essentially the same, but with EEQ and w/o the remote controls
EEQ is kinda nifty, lets you customize the EQ frequency (within bounds, e.g.
LOW 40 80 100 150 200
MED 500 1k 2k 4k
HIGH 6k 8k 10k
or something similar (download the manual for specifics) and also the sharpness of the EQ curve near those points (from real wide - wide - narrow - real narrow), and also has selectable rear low pass filters and lets you high pass filter the "front" speakers (i think front is anything non-subwoofer, depending on setup chosen)
it's got a little better display that's more readable in daylight (i had a DEH-45 in the last car before i sold it, and that green is tough to see on an angle)
anyway, it's got a few nice features, but nothing i'd spend a lot of money upgrading to from what you've got. of course, if you can do what i did, and sell your old one for the same price as your new one, there's no reason not to. (maybe an ebay auction w/reserve?). i think i got the DEH47 online for $180 somewhere about a year ago.
but overall, i think any of the pioneer 1.5 DIN are more than capable, and there's better things to spend money on than changing from one aftermarket stereo to the next. (or simply save your money, this has lots of benefits in the long run...)

I got the DEH - P8400MP Pioneer. Lot's of bells and whistles but I too like the adjustable EQ. But I say that if you head unit sounds okay spend money on improving the speakers, especially if you know the front are messed up. I mean those are the speakers closest to you and if they don't sound right improving the head unit is not gonna change that.
