need stereo help!
Hi guys,
First of all, i don't know **** about stereo's. I have a 86 iroc, and i would like to upgrade my stock stereo system. It has an old sony deck in it right now, and all stock speakers. I was wondering what to do about my speaker situation. I don't really listen to rap, and i am not really into huge subs and stuff like that, i just want a louder and clearer system with decent base. I listen to all kinds of rock and roll, anything from Led Zepplin--Jimi Hendrix all the way to Offspring, Adema, godsmack. I am looking for a somewhat inexpensive upgrade. What do you guys recommend? Replace stock speakers with better ones? Subs? Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks!

one of my personal favorite if not my favorite 6x9 speakers would be the 6x9 Infinity Reference 6952i 2 way speakers at around $80.00 for 2 or the Infinity Kappa 692.5i at around $200 for the 2 way speakers or even the Infinity Kappa 693.5i at $250 for 2 3way speakers, infinity are the best selling inexpensive 6x9's out there i would recommend to anyone...my friend at circuit city recommends them to everyone and so to all of his co-workers...just try em out and if u dont like them return them. i personally would go with the $80 set because u dont really know if u will like them but overall infinity are always on top...MB Quart have really good 5-1/4" speakers too but they get pretty expensive...hope i could help ya and keep in mind this is just my preferences and a few others.
infinities provide spectacular sound at a relatively inexpensive price. they sound nice off deck power, and if you're looking to add amps to your system (now or later on) they'll sound even better.
circuit city has infinity sales quite often too...im talkin buy one get one free(especially on the subs) im not sure if they do on 6x9's and such but id look into it...if u do go for subs also i would probably go with just one 10" sub and a fairly small amp since u dont like rap and that hard thump...i personally love rap thats just my preference but i will also listen to rock and even oldies because hey...today alot of the new rap songs are just old redone rock songs - - its all good have fun

Go with the 3-way Infinities. I like rock also. I love 80's rock. I have Infinty Kappa 3-way's and I love them. Take out your dash speakers and replace them with some good two way plate speakers. I have a set of Clarion Pro Audio SRC4650's. I like them well enough to not have replaced them yet. Eventually I will get some Infinity Kappa 4 1/2" two way plate speakers. You may not be a big BASS head but I would still install a small sub. Even if you don't play it loud, it will greatly enhance the overall sound of the system. I would say at least a 10" sub but I have never heard and 8" so they may be sufficient. You don't even have to buy a big name sub. Thats my 2cents.
i agree with eric but on the sub thing...i forgot all about the lonely 8"
they would sound pretty good for u IMO if u dont like alot of bass just something to compliment your great infinity's (if u go wit infinity)
Eric : as for the 3 ways i dont think he wants to spend all that much money on them but he could probably get them cheaper on ebay or somewhere that has a sale but i myself would be with Eric and go with 3 ways

Yeah, I'm just saying thats what I would do. It needs to be at least 2 ways. A lot of old rock, especially 80's, has quite a bit of highs in it (screeching guitars and what not). The three ways will really bring that out. IMO.

ok im gonna tell you this now so listen up. Becareful in buying infinity.....
Cause that will be the only brand of speakers you will want to buy. they are by far the best speakers i have encountered. i hate the tone of all MTX's most alpines. ive checked the stats and the perfects have some of the lowest hz. and man at the price they are offered you cant go wrong. i have been through many sets of the infinty mids (just to upgrade) and they just get better. i have nothing but good to say and i suggest everyone buy them.
if you are interested in subs the refferences are excellent for a person just begining a system. as stated earlier the refference series are great with the stock setup and are even better if you want to add a small amp. its amazing how well they work with such small power behind them. but yes if you want quality go with infinity.

Thanks a lot for the help guys, i will definatley look into the 2 way infinity speakers for $80, cause thats kinda what i'm looking to spend. I have seen a lot of custom made third gen sub boxes for sale latley in the classifieds, and i'm thinking of buying one, or i could just build one myself. I saw a box made for 2 10's, for 60 bucks, and i think thats with the subs too!! Probably cheap subs, but what the hell, thats cheap i think. I have a old sony cd deck in the car right now, should i look into getting a new one? I really don't want to spend a whole lotta money though, because i have a lot of perfomance mods coming up this spring that i need to pay for.
if you're not looking for a ton of bass, just make yourself a box for an 8", and save the space. (currently, using just what i had around leftover from my brother, i stuck a 6.5" dual voice coil subwoofer and small custom box in my convertible (fits nicely on the trunk shelf), and it makes a substantial improvement on the low frequency response. there's not too much below 50hz, but the 40-180 range is what my other speakers are lacking, so it does fine. sooner or later my brother will get tired of one of the 8"s, so i'll add a new face to the box and upgrade)
