TOP PLATE only Now!

i recently built a dual 10 box to fit my 3rd gen and have 2 mtx 6000's in it. it sounds pretty good but since the well of our cars acts as a sealed box with the right top plate anyway im just going to rebuild a top plate for it and then cut out 12 inch holes to out some serious shove in my car. has anyone ever done anything like this and if so how does it sound??? does it seal correctly? this will also help me out a lot my saving a little more weight out of our 5 trillion pound cars!

build an actual box, you'll be glad you did. Dont use a baffle aka top plate unless they are specifically free-air subs. Just putting a baffle there wont seal well enuf to have the subs perform like they should.

You couldnt fit 2 12"? Thats crazy, ask anyone on the board how they did it... lots of peeps have 2 12". I have one (soon to be 2) and they will fit in my box i have now. and alpines arent the smallest subs. Surely you can figure it out.

I've got my one 12" Pioneer like that.

Before the Pioneer, I had one 12" MTX Thunder3000 in there and hit 135.5 dB with a Punch 100 pushing it.

IMO the Pioneer sounds better. It's louder of course because it's a 4 ohm where the MTX was an 8 ohm (got it cheap) Regardless, it sounds better. Better quality.

Plates suck. Hard. It will not be sealed no matter how badly you want to think otherwise. There will be MASSIVE amounts of air leaking around all of the plastic panels. The ONLY part that seals half decent is the part that faces toward the front. Everything else seals about as well as a screen door in a hurricane.

There's no reason why you can't fit a pair of 12s in a conventional box. Plenty of us have that type of configuration here.

But even if for whatever reason you can't.... I'd happily take 1 10 in a box over 2 12s in a plate. It'll play louder, and sound a ton better. I've had every type of thirdgen install you can imagine, and I can say without hesitation that a plate is by far the worst of any configuration.
