Amp and sub questions!

I want to put an amp and sub in my car somewhere. Preferably in the back so I can pull my cover over them so a thief can't see them. Anyways, I don't need anything that's excessively loud. I was thinking about just getting one good 10" woofer. What kind of amp would I need? I see different things like 2 channel, 4 channel, bridgeable, etc. It's all french to me. I've never had an amp. Can you run the amp to the rest of the car speakers? I was up at Best buy and looked at some Rockford Fosgate subs and amps. Anybody ever try this brand? It sounded pretty good to me. How about an 8" woofer? I don't have a lot of room in my car. How do you guys deal with a sub? Are the 8" subs any good? Thanks for any info! Matt

Fosgate Are pretty good Speakers though I can't vouch for the amps. My friend has one and it sounds tight though. Fosgate are usually Top of the line.

The fosgate stuff has gone downhill recently, i'd look into eclipse and boston for speakers, and memphis for amps

www.subenclosures.com beg borrow plead and cry to get one of the stealthboxes from him, and order a set of the kicks, you can easily have a full stereo, with nearly no big stereo appearance, till you twist the volume ****

Basically a channel is one negative and one positive terminal, which will run one speaker. A 4 channel amp will run 4 speakers. Brigeable is simply the ability to run a single speaker (sub woofer generally) across 2 channels, using the negative terminal from one and the positive terminal from another. This puts the power from both channels through one speaker. For example, a 500 watt 2 channel amplifier will run a single bridged sub woofer in mono at 500 watts, or 2 speakers on 2 channels at 250 watts each. With regards to running the amp to the rest of the car speakers, the only limitation with this is how many channels your amp has. You CAN run multiple speakers on a single channel, but you then delve into impedance issues, and there is a limit to how far you can stretch your wattage before it becomes too low to make any difference.

How about an 8" woofer? I don't have a lot of room in my car. How do you guys deal with a sub? Are the 8" subs any good?
Woofer size affects the type of sound produced. A smaller sub like an 8" will produce punchy, sharp bass. A larger one, such as a 15" will produce deep, drawn out bass. 10" and 12" are good all-round subs. It really all depends on what type of music you listen to. Hip-hop and dance music benefit from smaller subs, where as gangster rap etc. prefer large subs.

Hope that helps,

Si
