mounting infinity 4x6 plates vertically in the dash?
since the infinity kappa 462.5 4x6 plate speakers dont fit on the drivers side dash (even after i chopped the crap out of the venting) i thought what if i mount them vertically? meaning have the 6" part of the speaker parallel with the the car...would that work out? i did a trial fit and the dash pad seemed to fit over it. but with the sound get muffled at all?

I got my old plates to fit with some cutting of plastic (but not the vent ducts) and by orienting the plate offcenter and it fit, but only 1 screw held it in, but thats not real a problem.
You want the speakers pointing up through the grill.

You mean have them facing your gauges??? I'm sure the gauges will get great sound, but you won't hear much.
May as well put styrofoam cups over your ears... It's cheaper and safer (except for getting a ticket ).

I get it, and I don't see why it would sound bad, except that you may loose some sound unless you cut the dashpad bigger... I looked that those speakers, they are the ones that have the separate tweeter from the rest of the speaker right? I drew a great pic of the ones I saw. If so, the way you are talking about mounting them I think the tweeter will be covered... but the real way to find out is to do it and see how it sounds!

the only reason i want to do it like this is because they wont fit the regular way. the gauge cluster is in the way. i cut out most of the venting too but the gauge clust is the primary thing thats blocking it...

Yeah, that was the whole reason why I didn't get those... I suggest just selling them and getting a pair of MB Quart CD 146's, as those sound perfect!

Is it the black plastic thats in the way or the white plastic of the actual gauge pod? And what part of the plate is hitting? If I remember correctly, my kappa plates had the tweeter towards the outside. You can get alittle over 2" depth over the white part of the gauge cluster.

You could always cut the hell out of the dash, and use some old 6x9 grates to cover the hole... would look pretty custom, and you could get the speakers mounted any way you wanted to.
I had a message up about this, haven't had the time (isn't that always the f'ing case!!) to try it yet though: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=175420

hmm yeah. you know what? thats actually a pretty good idea...i could put the dash pad back on with the grills out. then drop the speakers in through the grill and see if i have enough clearance. if i dont, mabye i could just extrend the legs of the stock grills, and have the grill sticking up a bit...if not ill just hack at the dash pad itself . it doesnt matter, its cracked anyway...hehehe

I posted the same idea a while back. My idea was to actually use the grills from the speakers and flush mount them where the openings are on the dashpad. Essentially attaching them to the dash pad so that they drop right in. I think it would look pretty good, would just need the right grill. The wrong grill would look pretty ghetto up there.

You will have to cut the pad under the speaker grill if you want to drop them in from the top. For a while I had 5.25" speakers sitting in the dash without the grills and covered over with a dashmat. Helped hide the cracks too.

Looks like I'm kinda late, but I have the same speakers and ran into the same problem. I just said screw it, and just screwed the speakers down, so the plastic plate is curved a little bit. It hold just fine.

The above technical assistance has been brought to you by ISAE (the I-can-make-anything-fit-my-car-if-I-just-use-a-big-enough-hammer School of Automotive Engineering). Stay tuned for our next edition, wherein we install an Allison 16 cylinder turbo-diesel engine using only bailing wire and masking tape

I ahd the same problem with the same plates, but i just took the covers off and mounted them ontop of the dash, and they still sound awsome. i got a pair of infinity kappa 6X9's, with both pairs running off the deck the sounded sweet, but when hooked up to an amp(like my 200 watt clarion) they will cound freakin awsome, ya your dash should be able just to fit right in and thell, still sound really good
