Convertible Sub Enclosure Angles, Dimensions, Etc

I traded in the third gens for a 1998 Firebird Convertible. Answers are few and far between because my trunk is sized differently.

I have a box, it fits, but it was poorly constructed and is short on air volume by about .35-.45 cu ft per speaker. My 2 12" MTX 6000's require 1.25 cu ft per speaker in a sealed enclosure.

#1) When I redesign the box I have, I can probably squeeze out that extra air space, but I'll have a sealed box and not a ported one. Should I port the box anyway and be back to insufficient air space?

#2) Everyone faces their speakers towards the rear hatch (glass) to increase focal length, but in my situation I'm only going to gain about 6" if I choose to face them towards the rear instead of the front. Does this really matter in terms of sound quality?

#3) With my redesign, my speakers are going to end up facing almost directly parallel to the ground, straight up in the air. Again, should I be concerned with sound quality given that they're going to be so close to the trunk lid, with the sound waves bouncing right back at the speakers?

These are the two initial designs, as the box is now. My plan is to increase the short side (rear trunk wall side) to increase volume in the box; decrease the length of the long side (front of the car) in order to bring it closer to the level of the rear deck.

My plan there is to have a single flush mount piece to hold the amp, capacitor, AND serve as the beauty board for the subs. I think everything will look VERY clean this way, but this is why I'm concerned about the speakers facing straight up and down, you can see what's going to happen to the angle.

Anyway, initial comments are helpful, I want to work on this the week of the 26th.
