Another subs install with t-tops

pat12spe's recent post just reminded me that I hadn't posted picks of my install. Before my install, I was searching for pictures of installs taking into account t-top storage. I wanted an install that would still allow me to store my t-tops, and ideally also still allow me use of the storage compartment on the drivers side, and maybe a bit of space for groceries and such.

Looks nice, you did a good job. I went for more box than you did so my t-tops dont fit in the original spot, but they still fit back there.

Thanks, but a local shop did the work on it. I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

My box takes up the whole trunk and it is flush with my amp rack. There is even a small box beneath the main box that holds the subs which is connected to the sub box to provide more air. My system sounds really good!!! Since there is not much air for your subs does it still have solid sounding base?

To be honest, I'm not particularly happy with how my bass has been sounding. (There's another recent thread I've started talking about this.) But I haven't been able to figure out if it is due to the size of the box, or just tuning, or what. The size of the box is about midway of the range the subs call for...

Do the subs rattle your t-tops when you have them in the bag?

if you want quality sound, the sub box should be built to the dimensions spec'd with the subs. I have a box which came with a small box that bolts up to the bottom and fills the bottom of the trunk. I didn't use it because my subs require .85cu ft each and without that box i measured 2cu ft. .. They were 12's .. looks like you have 10's? cu ft wise you're probably right on the money.. great job.. my ttops are going to reside on the back seats..

3.1RS - The install ran me about $600-700 canadian. (10 hours labor at $50/hour, +materials, +taxes). It was something I knew I couldn't do myself.

dramaone - T-Tops in the bag don't rattle at all. The only rattles are the typical loose panels that I'm sure a lot of people have to deal with.

Thirim - For the subs I have, Crutchfield gave a range of box sizes for them... I think the box is a bit under 2 cu ft, and the subs need .65 - 1.25 each for a sealed box. The subs in the pictures (some old Rockfords i had) needed a much larger volume, and they sounded like crap. Actually had to unplug one of them to make it sound even half decent.

dude you were burned on that price....mine was 189$ Canadian and its a bigger box, specially made for 3rd gen camaros. $600 is way too much IMO.

i like that setup a lot where the box takes up the whole trunk ive seen quite a few like that im sure it sounds nice with that big spacious box...im thinking about doing the same thing myself, but im wondering if it would be possible to fit 4 10"s in the same way you put yours...i drew it out on a template and it was tight but it looked like it would probably work...however ive never seen anybody with it and i was wondering if anyone had done it or if was possible at all.

The price is on the high side if all I wanted was a box, but it was also all custom work. It wasn't as if they had a premade box or even the plans for it. I was looking for something specific, and they gave me exactly what I wanted. It's certainly not something I'd recommend to someone in general. LOL

I like it. Definitely a different way to approach it. What do you have covering the speakers? Those pics are kinda small and I can't really see what's on top of them. Let's just hope you don't have a lot of heavy groceries and then see some hotties on the side of the road. Trying to impress them with your system with groceries on top is not the way to go....hehe trust me on that one.

I will try to post a pic in the next couple of days!!!!!!!!! California Car Stereo did mine and they were shocked on how loud it was. I have a small kenwood amp for my 4 way Pioneer 6x9 and a Kenwood Mono Sub amp powering 2 Kenwood 12s!!!!!!! I am using a Sony Explod deck with the Black digital Display............ It is awsome. The guys were shocked on how hard and loud my system was. The box was custom made and the extra box that is connected to it gives the car even more thump. They told me that a big reason for the sound is because the car is a hatchback so the subs are able to bouce off the glass???????? Maybe be true.... Either way I will post a pic when I get around to it!

Covering the subs is just a carpeted board. There are holes cut out of it where it covers the subs, so the subs don't touch it at all. The holes then have heavy gauge wire mesh over them. So I can set whatever I want on top of the board, and not have to worry about damaging the subs. It's also a nice way to hide the subs.

Whew! Am I ever glad I went with hiding everything in the back. My car was broken into a few days ago. They only got the stereo, but they were looking in the back. (The back seat was folded down, as if they had climbed back from the front to take a look.) I'm guessing they didn't think anything was back there. Thank *** for VATS too, otherwise they'd have the whole car now. Guess it's time I installed that car alarm I bought a few months ago. :P

That is why I dont want to get rid of my Vats setup. Everyone is telling me I will run into problems converting my TBI to TPI! Some say that thieves dont care about VATS and it can be bypassed but most criminials are to stupid to figure out how to work it. Any criminal smart enough to work it will not waste their time on a 3rd gen anyway!

That's what I figure too. Anyone who knows enough to get around VATS is probably serious enough to get around most other things too and is probably looking for a bigger score than a thirdgen. I worry more about people ripping off the stereo than people ripping off the car itself.

Same with me! As long as I have my seats up and the pull over cover for the hatch you cant see a thing. But if people know my car which stands out I worry about people seeing my car when I have my music thumping because then they will know my car has stuff in it without seeing a thing!

Yeah. I'll turn my stereo off when I'm about 2 blocks away from anywhere I'm going to park. Doesn't mean someone still won't recognize it, but at least it helps.

But I will have to say, after seeing my busted steering column, it's disturbing how easy it is to start the car. It's definitely worth it for someone to get an immobilizer. Hiding things doesn't matter if the guy can drive off with the car and take his time going through it some place else.

No that's actually the box. The subs fire downwards. I tested them facing up as well...the box will fit either way, and they sound a hell of a lot better facing downward.

I would not be able to do that. I have an additional box underneath the box that holds the subs. Gives the car more bass........

you know the worst hing about having your stuff jacked.... you know some *** clown only pays the thief like 30 bucks for your entire 2,000 dollar setup. i wish the thief who stol my sub from my old car had come to me and said, hey, you wanna buy your stuff back. course i would have killed him, maybee it's better this way. i don't like the idea of jail.

by the way, what do these acronyms mean VATS TBI TPI

VATS - vehicle antitheft system
TBI - throttle body injection (big old air cleaner on top of engine)
TPI - tuned port injection (plenum, intake and runners on engine)
