Stupid question here, but why bother?..there's absolutely no need for that.

Just because you don't like that much bass doesn't mean others don't. Nobody "needs" 400 horsepower either, but there seems to be an awful lot of people that want it.

True, i agree with ya there jim, but also you seem to be one of the more knowledgable people on the audio board, and you know as well as i that you can achieve the same amount of low end w/less speakers. Just get better quality with greater power handling.

There's no replacement for displacement. We all know that term well. It applies to bass too. All that matters for SPL is how much air you move. Moving air is a function of cone area and excursion. If you want high spl with good sound quality, the best way is to add more cone area, because as you add excursion, you lose linearity. Granted, the JL W7 and the Brahma don't apply to this reasoning, but those subs aren't cheap. For any other sub, you run into non-linearity issues, so gettign super loud with a clean sound requires more cone area.

If he's talking about using 4 legacy subs, then I'll agree that there are better ways to accomplish your goal with less speakers, but if he's using good quality stuff, adding more speakers is a good way to get more output. Like I said above, unless you cough up the dough for Brahmas or W7s, using higher excursion subs isn't going to provide the same sound quality at the high SPLs, plus you still wind up with less reliability and more expensive bills when you start blowing stuff up.
