Professional electronics people, MECP, or other's interested....crossover Q/A....

I am looking for some serious electronics pro's, hobbyists, students and knowledgable installers to discuss building custom crossover circuits.

I know the basic function of capacitors, inducters, resistors, OP-amps, etc.. in circuits

I am ready to test for MECP basic, I am done with all electronics courses for my Associates degree in electronics and I have served in the Navy as an electronics technician. Knowledge of electronics is not a challenge for me. The challenge is finding good people to discuss this type of stuff with, who are knowledgable yet not concieded about thier abilities.

I'd like to invest in a bread board, (digital multimer/oscillscope to analyize sound signals) and experiment with different crossover designs. I'd like to start with basic passive circuits and work with some active op-amp circuits and learn some more about the zobel impedence matching networks.

I would also like to know how to arrange components to match impedences of input and output terminals, to do factory/aftermarket mixed systems. some say it cannot be done, but I'd like to prove them wrong. Anyone is welcome to make suggestions or share war stories. I know caps and coils can be pricey so I'd like to make sure it's worth while. I've already spent $40 on power supply caps and output Qs to fix an amp that worked for a week, but is already blowing fuses again.....that's what I get for fixing an amp without a schematic!

finally, has anyone tested for MECP basic or currently studying for it? I feel I am ready to test as long as I stay on top of the power formulas and a few other details, everyone tells me it's a very difficult test, but so was the Navy's electronics school. The Navy would never give away $11,000 enlistment bonuses to people who don't know electronics....well sometimes, but not for me! Why is it that most installers think MECP is irrelevant, but have difficulty wiring boxes and relays? I think it's a pride thing, I certainly don't think MECP proves anything and doesn't include 'hands on automotive exp.', but if you aren't sharp on most of the content of that book, you really don't belong in a professional installation bay. I want that certification to earn credibility with my 'private' customers and hopefully get a reasonable offer to work at a sound shop. I don't have $14,000 worth of Snap-On tools, but at least I know what I'm doing! Auto sound &security is actually way below my technical level, pay stinks, but it's a fun job.

NO FLAMING!! cite your sources! and be quite if you're in the novice catogory.....read and learn!

I have a copy of visio, so I will probably start using that for schematics.

the MECP test is not that bad,i am MECP certified first class. you just need to buy a study guide and read it thoroughly. i did that twice, passed with flying colors!
