What exactly is a crossover and what exactly do?

I was wandering what a cross-over is and what a decent for cheap is? Thanks Boes

Engine: LS1 / 305 / 2.8, respectively
Transmission: T-56 / auto / auto
A crossover is used to block certain frequencies from going to certain speakers. (ex: you don't want highs going to your subs, it just adds to distortion and sounds crappy). Most amps have built-in Xovers.
