Stock Wire Color Codes
Stock Wire Color Codes
I want to wire my new head unit, but I have never done a stereo installation before. I don't plan on installing an amp or new speakers, just the new head unit.
(Pioneer DEH-P44)
Does anyone know what color is what on the stock wires? I have an 87 RS (6 Cyl). The previous owner removed their system before I bought the car so I have a big blank cavern.
Thanks.

do a search. I've posted it a million times, but I'm at work right now and way too lazy to find it again.

Dude, save yourself the time and hassel. Goto any retail store that does installs and buy a 'harness' Its basically a stock radio adapter that plus directly into the adapter from the stock radio, then it has a bunch of exposed wires, and in most cases (at least on my pioneer) the colors will match the new radio's wires. They also come with a wiring guide, and are great if you ever need to plug the ol radio back in.

This is good info if your harness is already hacked, but if you're planning on hacking your harness instead of using an adapter, rethink your plans. Butchering your car to save $10 is silly, and if you ever need to work on it later (and you will) you'll really be regretting it.

(laughs) Actually I prefer to cut the stock connector off. Then I solder the factory harness to the new radio, and use heat shrink over the connection. Everyone thinks I'm nuts, but hey, to each their own! Way back when, they didn't have nifty little plug-in harnesses, splicing was the only way to do it.
