Using high level inputs on an AMP??
With a factory head unit, is it safe for the head unit's amp, to have the rear speaker outputs powering the speakers and running the same signal to high level inputs on an aftermarket amp? I know the Factory unit is not a high power one, so the other amp should be safe.. but would the Factory amp be ok with that amp wired into it also? Thanks
I did a search, and no one mentioned how safe it was to the factory amp system.
I know everyone says the late 80's early 90's factory decks are not good.. but I want it anyways.. ditchin my 2001 Clarion for it..

will it work?
yes... ive done it before.
but the stereos that came in our cars have 2 main probs.
1. they arnt to great to begin with.
2. they get worse with age.
when i had my factory CD player installed, i wired everything up..... sounded like total ****... i couldnt believe how bad it sounded...
just to test, i put another old 3rdgen radio from a 87(i think) in there.... sounded terrible too..
then i connected a old alpine unit... and it sounded so clear....... so i re wired everything for the low level out puts...... then i find the alpine wont play CDRs....... so i get a cheap $120 pioneer...
sounds clear and plays CDs now..
looking back, i think the problem is that the really low freqs are distorted by the stock stereo... and when you amp that noise, it gets much worse.... you will notice it.
now some of the the later 4thgen models are great.... no distortion when you amp thoes
so if you want that stock GM look and want to just pick sound off the speakers, id swap to a 4thgen headunit, and run a high to low level converter box, into the amp. GENERALLY speaking, a good brand name converter is much "cleaner" then the built in on amp converter

1. they want to keep it looking factory
2. theft prevention. a great point when you have a vert.
3. they're totally broke
theres also the fourth "i just dont care" segment, but they really arnt part of the conversation....
in anycase 5mins with a hot soldering iron is worth it to anyone in thoes 3 catagorys..... and if you screw up, you can try again with another one.
