Sail Panel Update
Well, it has finally warmed up enough to start working again on my audio system. It keeps raining so it is going slow at the moment but going slow is better than not at all.
I got the speaker rings for the 8" subs mounted to the fiberglassed sail panels. I think they look really good right now. I am going to have the 8" subs firing at the back of each seat and the other speakers that will be above the 8"s with be firing more towards the center of the front of the car. I hope that this works and sounds awesome when they are done.
Here are some pics of what I have just finished.

I haven't decided if I am going to go with 5.25" component set or a 6.5 component set. Both sets have the tweeter installed in the middle of the speaker which will help with installing them in the sail panels. I will have more pics as this project progresses.

if you are going to put in components with the tweeter in the middle, you might as well just get coaxial... and if I were you I would not even bother putting the high's back there at all, it will only bother the passengers, and you won't hear it. Just get the kick panels, or put some components in the doors.
In either case I'd love to see a picture of your fiberglass box for your 8" speakers

I think I am going with a set of alpine type r 6.5 component set to go on the sail panel. I am wanting to put the highs back there more for a surround sound effect once I get the dvd system put in.
As for the fiberglass box for the 8" speaker, they are being mounted to the sail panel as well. The 8's will be at the bottom, then the 6.5 midrange, then the tweeter on top. The pics that I have are of the 8" speaker rings mounted tot he sail panels. I dont usually have people riding in the back of my car so I am not to worried about it bothering them. If the pics are not showing up here, just check my website on page 14 i think it is for the progress of this project. http://www.cardomain.com/id/kitt350

you could probably get even deeper bass if you did some research and made it a ported enclosure, especially if you are going to be watching DVDs... a ported sail panel enclosure would sound a lot better. Now that I hear that you are going for surround sound I see why you are putting in the highs in the rear, sound like a good idea.
For me, I am planning on possibly putting some highs in the plastic around the hatch area... I think that the distance and the hatch glass would create a great sense of stereo separation..... making surround sound more obvious.. Plus when you open the hatch, all the sound will reflect off the glass and you can be a big hit at a party or the beach or whatever.

As for porting the inclosure, do you mean porting it out the front or out the back of it? I may end up having to open up the back of it to give it more air. I had to do with when I had them in the doors on my 90 daytona.
As for the deep bass goes, I am not to extemely conserned with this. The 8's are just for that little extra bass. The real bass will be coming from the 2 15's that will be in a custom fiberglass enclosure in the back.
I do appreciate your input and suggestions so keep them coming if you have any more ideas on how to make this better.

I don't know, maybe you could like drill some port holes in the wall somewhere, or just make them in the enclosure, facing the back seat, you would prolly want the port to face the listener, but its not too terribly important....
Curious, how much cubic feet do you think you can get out of this enclosure? I assume you removed all that black padding that came with the car?

my question is you have all that space behind the sail panel. Like the area the 6x9 sits and beyond, so why make a enclosure that sticks out so far? You could just as easily make a fiberglass enclosure that sits in the 6x9 area, holds an 8 and doesnt stick out.

Yes, I could have done that but I was wanting the subs to be firing forward towards the seats instead of at the passenger in the back. Plus I think it will look a lot better this way instead of it being in the sidewall.
As for the ports, I will probably open up the back of the sail panel a bit to give them a little more air. I did this with them while they were in my doors in my daytona and I thought they gave off enough bass that way. I am not trying to make these 8's rattle the car, just to give a little more bass to the system when I am not running the 15's.

are people going to be able to get in the back seats with those enclosures pokin out?
also, br()bert, how would you go about creating a fiberglass enclosure in the 6x9 area, you would have to actually create the entire thing inside the 6x9 area, and not outside, correct? Unless you can remove paneling, and/or metal in the way, and slide in this fiberglass enclosure.

They might be able to get in with the enclosures sticking out, but I am not to worried about that. Usually it is just me an my girlfriend in the car and no one in the back. Will have to see how it looks once that they are finished enough to put back in the car to see what they look like.

wow, if that metal is easily removable, then you could create a custom fiberglass enclosure in there, AND have the subs point towards the back seat.
