making a fiberglass enclosure inside the 6x9 area would help alot with bass.
I remember when i first got my car i went out and listend to a bunch of speakers and picked out the set that sounded the best. Went home stuck them in the car . Put in a cd and was like "WTF"!!! I took a look inside the speaker area and theirs a big hole leading back to the spare tire area on the pass side and back to the glave compartment area on the drivers side so the speakers are kinda free air. That kills alot of potential for bass.
I still havnt made them for my car. I did just finish a fiberglass box/ amp rack that fits in the lower well.
If you make them buy a GOOD mask. Fiberglass resin is strong.
Also if you wanted to , you could angle the speakers so they wernt facing directly towards each other.

if anything i would just resin the baffles that are in there and make them air tight. i covered the holes and the baffles iwht a few layers of duct tape for now, but once it gets nice out i will tkae them out and resin them
i have made a box, amp rack, and kick panels out of resin, and the fumes dont bother me
