6x9 vs 6.5" speakers
ok i did a search but i coudl not get a straight answer from anythign i found.
i have just put some new 6x9 pioneers in the back of my car and tehy do no sound good, and after 3 layers of brown bread i will have alot of rattles.
would i get better response from making a plate and sticking some 6.5" speakers in the sails ?
what are the pro's and cons of each speaker being in teh sails ?
p.s. btoh sets would be run off a kenwood amp.

the rattles are probably coming from the plate the 6x9's are mountned in, It shakes and hits the body of the car causing rattles . You need to take the plate off and dynamat (or whatever) under it. Also you wont get the bass you think you would from this area because inside the sail panle their is a hole leading back to the back of the car. Seal this area tight with fiberglasss and bass would improve.
Also, components sound better than oval speakers overall.

When I do my system I'm gonna go with a 6.5" component set instead of the 6x9's. Just like br()bert said, components sound much better than packaged speakers (like 6x9's). I lost the link, but there is a company that makes the enclosure conversion plates for our 6x9 space to run 6.5" drivers. Then the only matter would be mounting the seperates for the rear speakers. I would also do what br()bert said, and make sure you 'band-aid' up the enclosure space with dynamat or other materials.
Do they sound bad just becuase they rattle? If thats the case getting 6.5s won't help that. If the speakers sound bad regardless of the rattles and you are going to buy new speakers I would also recomend 6.5s. Iintead of using fiberglass to seal the spaces behind the speakers you can use expanding foam.
Are these running off of the HU power or off of an amp?

they are amp'd but even when they were on the hu they still rattled, they sound bad because of the rattles
if i was to eclose i would use fiberglass and not expanding foam, not going to go through that and have it wreck my quarters

Personally, I would try to hunt down the rattles first. Like br()bert said, put down some dynamat before you mount the speakers. Also check the vents in the door jambs, as they rattle a lot too with aftermarket 6x9s.
I know I've seen plate setups in 6x9 form that come with a 6" driver and a tweeter pre-mounted. If I find one I'll post it.

My 6x9's rattle my door handles and the linkage in the doors... that really can't be fixed except maybe by some axle grease.
Also my door vent thing (in the 1/4 panel part) rattles. Sounds great if you take it off, but looks like a ss.
