My 151.6 dB system, Take a look!

Well, I finally got some pics of my system. Starting in the front it features an Alpine CDA-9815 headunit, Boston 4x6's and 6x9's, 13 year old alpine tweets (couldnt even tell you the number) in the doors where the manual window cranks used to be, then movin to the back we have a Planet Audio TT1250D pushin 2 8812 (i think) Aluminum Cone DVC Eclipse subs, a pre-fabed box (but not for long), and a Clarion 400x4 runnin all the highs. All this is powered by Audiopipe 0 ga wiring, with audiopipe distribution centers runnin 4 ga to the Planet Audio and 8 ga to the Clarion. I have 8 ga wire ran as speaker wire for the subs as well. A Kole 2.5 Farad cap keeps the light dimming to a minimum (but doesn't stop it) and Tsunami Fuses throughout the car. All this gives the mind numbing 151.6 dB metered at the passenger kick panel. But Im not done yet...so to come are the new Planet Audio BB1250D digital amps. They are smaller, more powerful, and look just as good. A 4 channel Planet Audio amp will get the highs, and possibly a new deck, I want the new Alpine CDA-9835. But enough talk, here are the pics! Give me your compliments/suggestions!

PS...I know I need to clean up the wires.

I love those Clarion amps, there great. And one of the most robust power supples out there, they'll dump power into a short and not flinch.

hope that helps

planet audio puts out some impressive numbers for the price, but they are usally very dirty, my friend fried his id max with a PA (think) 1000d which brings me to my next point, clipping is bad, esp with a 400$$ sub

It was metered at the passenger kick panel and I pretty sure it was an older meter, not that new stuff. The Planet Audio amp is a great amp, havent had any problems with it and it sounds nice and clean. There new BB (big Band) digital series amps are the cleanest sounding amps I've ever heard. I cant wait to get 3 of them :hail: :hail: :lala:

those clarion amps are quite unbelievable. a couple of the amps from that line are actually the same as some high end amps (arc audio designed the board, etc for themselves and clarion bought them for their amps). was actually looking into the high power 2 ch one just cause the prices are so low on ebay....

ahh ok that makes sense then...i thought that was a little high for a legal score. Still a good accomplishment though, next time if you get metered ask what brand mic it is and ask them to do a legal score (on dash) cause thats what most comps will go by.

From a sound quality standpoint, I can't see how having tweeters in those positions could do any good at all. .... something to think about.

Basically they are there just to fill up the holes my manual windows left when I replaced them with power windows. Cant really hear them...but they were free so I used them. As for the comment

Why does it seem so hard to believe I hit 151.6 dB with my system? 151 isnt nuthin now. just cuz it wasnt metered on the dash...I was at a comp when it was metered. Im just curious. I know that alot of people do the door swing at comps where they swing there drivers door open and closed so that it builds a lil bit more pressure..I left my door cracked, but didnt swing it. My other post got shot down within 3 or 4 posts because they thought it would start a flame war over dB's. If it is louder at one spot than another in the car, why cant I use the position where it was louder. To me, every car has it's own sweetspot and I dont see why we cant have the mic positioned so we get the loudest dB from the work we put into the system. Not trying to start a war or anything, just want to know why 151 is so hard to believe.

It's not hard to believe, but it's not considered "legal" because of where the mic was.

The mic is supposed to be 12 inches from the passenger side window pillar, 4 inches above the dash and 1 inch from the windshield, and facing forward towards the windshield.

Regardless, all cars are measured in the same spot for consistency. It keeps a level playing field.

What you're asking is equivilent to asking the drag strip to time your car 7/16 of a mile instead of 1/4 mile because your car hits the speed limiter the last 1/16th of a mile.

ya exactly....im not putting down your setup at all, dont get me wrong. But your score can be off by like 20db depending on where the mic is and what kind of mic it is. Having a legal score just evens the playing field.

I didn't realize it could make that big of difference. I'm not sure when the next comp is, but when I go I'll have them meter it from that spot...I'd have it done sooner, but the closest mic is almost 2 hours away and it's 20 bucks to meter your vehicle...

Dang, I've been letting the guys around here come over for free and test on the new sensor. I could be making a killing if i charged them that much.

DISTURBthePEACE,

We're only telling you this because it adds to your bragging rights when you can say your SPL is "legal"

There is another class of SPL called Outlaw that allows the competitors to place the mic anywhere in the car they feel the need as long as it isn't near a port of a box, and won't be damaged from moving speakers (i.e. not ON the speaker) LOL.

Your 151.6 seems legit, but to save face you should get it done with the mic in the legal spot. That way when someone who really knows stereos asks you "where was the mic?", you can tell them "the same place IASCA puts it for dB5 competition."

For instance.. my old system hit 135.5 dB (IIRC. That was 2 yrs ago) with the mic in the legal spot. Some people hit A LOT more than I did, but also had A LOT more $$$ into their system.

The Kicker 2 door Blazer was at that same comp, and they tested it. It only hit ~148 dB, and it has a hell of a lot of stuff.

i always thought that a legal score should be something like 4 inches in front of the drivers headrest because thats where your ears are so thats what matters most.

ive only had one of my cars metered once and did a 142.2 legal but it was at 27hz I think this season the extreme guys are up in the 175s on the new mics. Most people get extremely uncomfortable sitting in a car that does over 150db legal. My goal for this current setup is a 155 legal but i cant get metered until may 9th at the soonest comp

i agree the XXXs are awesome i had 2, each powered my a rockford 1500.1 at 1 ohm, (actually it was like 1.3 or comething like that) each in a 5.5 cu ft box ported at 40Hz i beleive it was 65 in2 port area, its been a while since i built the box, and they were unbeleivable, they were a wall in my old s10, it blew seal around the windshield once (that i know of ) but that is all gone now and i have a Z, i wish i could have gotten it metered before i sold it but noone around here did it legally...

*eric*

BTW: they were 15s...
