building own "box"

i recently bought 2 used 12 inch JBL subs, the and the box is HUGE, took two guys to get it to fit in the back of my T/A to take it home..... but the question is.......

i want to take the speakers out, buy a peice of thick pressure board ( plywood ), cut it out to the shape of my trunk around, cut hole for speakers, make some sort of mounting device to keep it up. will this work , or do i have to actully make a 3d BOX, or will the air from my trunk space be good enough?

does anybody have pictures of what im talking about ? how did you guys mount it to stay up? etc.

what you want to make is a plate, very bad idea. Stick to a box if you care what it sounds like.

i have to argue with you on this one i just got my "plate" installed i used 3/4" particle with a 1x1 on the front and back for exrat support. However i mounted mine in the very bottom as teh bottom rectangular area came out to jsut the right amount of airspace. Right now the amp isnt tuned and the speakers are about 4 hours old and it frickin pounds. I think how i got away with it is the board fits super tight into the bottom so it doesnt reall leak air. Sounds awesom and looks sweet. I'll post pics tomorrow afternoon. I'm runnign two fosgate 12"'s with a 900 watt amp and lightning audio 8awg wiring. It bumps liek i didnt expect it to

The only way i can see it really work is if completely seal the whole well. That would kinda be like a infinite baffle setup.

If that dosnt affect the way you use your car, I use my back seat for just temoprary storage, so I couldn't live with that.

I bet it would sound better in a box....Me spending all my time and money on making a fiberglass box was my best investment stereo wise...Sure yours sounds good, But it eould sound better in a box

yeah well ive seen a camaro with 8 12s in a wall... i dunno but having 4 friends in the car kinda sux as it is and i have long legs so there is like 2in of space in between the back of mah seat and the front of the other... i cant see filling up what little useful space with sumthin that can be put all the way in the back anyways

Plus it just looks better in a nice setup in the back. I think just laying it in the back seat looks "half-assed" Although i'm also the person who cant have a single wire showing anywhere through the system.
