Help, want to get this right first time

I have a 91Z with stock stereo, I have replaced the stock speakers with eclipse speakers a couple years ago. I am now ready to put a cd player in the car. Local dealer sells pioneer/alpine and eclipse. The salesman recommended the eclipse #CD5444, really like the memory stick feature. I do have a older sony amplifier I used in another car with35WX2 at 20~20000Hz, 0.08% T.H.D, 4(and some symbol that looks like a upside down horseshoe). They want to install the eclipse stereo and then use the amp on the rear speakers.

Does thes sound like a good setup? I figure if I want to run a small subwoofer down the road I could just use the amp to run them.

I don't have clue what to do with my car for a decent system. Doing a search is like reading jargon to me.

If I went with a sub, what kind and where is the best place to buy a box for our F-bodies. Thanks, Steve

I wouldn't bother with the amp. Get rid of it; it's a marginal improvement if at all for the speakers, and is too weak to power a sub. Run all four speakers off of the headunit.

As for subs, I really recommend just doing a lot of reading here about what others did with their cars. There are a lot of options for sub and amp brand and how much power you want. You can also go with a hidden setup or a fully customized fiberglass box with 4+ subs getting shown off through the window. It all depends on what you want and how much money you can spend.

Yes, did a bit of reading and the realized the amp is way too small. Guess in 1990 it worked OK. Headunit should have enough power for the 4 speakers I have in the car.

And boy everyone has their favorties when it comes to subs.

ahhh, disagree highly. decks are "rated" at 50 or so by 4 channels, but actually make in the realm of 10 or 12 wrms. in that light, you can see how the amplifier has a LOT more power.

the amp is definitely 2 ohm stable in stereo, so you could run all 4 speakers off the amp. the dynamic improvement over deck power should be quite noticeable. You won't have fader capability, which means the 6x9's in the rear will be louder than the 4x6's in the dash. if ur ok with that, leave it. if not, you can put LPAD's on the rears and tune them down.

I really don't see how an old 2-channel Sony amp is any kind of improvement over a new 4-channel Eclipse headunit. Then again, we are arguing semantics without knowing what model and year Sony amp it is.

you beat me to it. in terms of power output, assuming that both pieces of equipment were in perfect working order, the sony amp has notably more headroom and power. yes
