it really depends on what sub you're using, what kind of music you like, how much space you have and the power going to your sub or subs.
personally i prefer running larger ported boxes for any sub except those that are specially made for sealed applications. Sealed will allow you to have a smaller box if you're working in a confeined space but i havent had this yet lol. My cars have been sub boxes on wheels.

if your looking for more tight punchy bass go for sealed. Ported and bandpass are more spl based and are "louder"..Its hard to explain....
your best bet is to check out a shop locally and see what you like better. Then get some ideas on which size, brand, etc.

It depends on a million things. In addition to what was already mentioned above, the driver itself plays a huge role. Some drivers are not particularly suited to certain types of enclosures, and others, although they may be suitable to multiple types, may require a specific alignment to achieve a desired result.
