i need some subwoofer help...

heres the problem:

i have a convertible. i need to retain my storage space back there.. i sometimes park with the top down, and i like being able to toss stuff in the trunk.
im making a fiberglass enclosure for a 10" sub. this will replace the plastic cover that goes over the spare tire area. it will still be a "box", not a plate, but i need to retain storage in that area for emergency things i carry with me everywhere (tools, first aid kit, ect)

this limits me to a very small box size.

i dont know crap about audio.. i had a generic box sitting back there and it sounds ok..

im NOT looking to go BOOOM BOOM BOOM. i dont like a huge amount of bass. mostly im looking for clear sound. and it has to be somewhat clear at volume, since i have to have it play over the road noise.

but from everything ive read, you need "box volume" to keep it clear... then again, you cant always trust what you find online.

now im not a audiophile.. absolute best isnt worth it to me if it costs 4 times the price. im looking for price value too. various options and opinions would be great..

knowing my setup, what would you reccomend for a 10" subwoofer in a smallish box?

Ok it seems to me your best off buying some subs that are designed for trucks and then get a truck box cause they are pretty thin and then with the truck subs they will still have enough air volume in the box to make it sound pretty good. MTX has some pretty good truck subs then the box you get is up to you

Have you considered a Bazooka tube? They make powered ones so you dont need an external amp. I have a 10" powered in my TA. I love it, great sound quality, hard to distort, and ity takes up very little space.

but the little bit of space that it does take up is my only storage well.

basicly, im putting a 10" sub in the plastic on the passenger side of the car. on the "wall" next to the well...

i just need to know what kind of sub i need to be looking at... that kind of thing.

I was thinking of getting one of those Bazookas. Where/how do you have yours mounted? I saw one that looks just like a nitrous bottle. Pretty cool.

How about an Elemental Designs 10". Everyone I've talked to says that they are very good in the sound quality department, and even decent in the SPL area (they are from a competition background)

Best part, you can mount them in HALF a cubic foot of space, and not have any problems. They might be a little more expensive than what you're looking at, but they are a still a great deal, especially if you need to conserve space.

Actually, the site says they will even work in .3 cubic feet of space

A truck sub is smaller and wedged shaped. Usually the cubic volume of air is in the less than 1 cubic foot of air range.

yea thats it they use less air than normal subs to produce the sound so they can be skinner which makes it possible to mount them in smaller areas

I have a 10 in my car now and have own a have listened to theentire Kv2 line. Nice subs, much more reliable than the flat cone series and they have nice sq even ported. After the first of the year I plan to build a ported box for my camaro with the 10

I have a flat cone e10kx.2 and absolutely love it...its got right at .4 cu ft of air space with close to 250 watts rms from a kicker 200.1 amp running to it...sounds great...will still thump a bit...but like said before has excellent SQ. Plus you can't beat the warranty.
