broken/missing factory radio brackets

When I bought my car, it did not have a radio installed, but came with a cd player separate. I went and bought a radio installation kit at wal-mart today, the Scosche GM1503. When I tried to install my cd player in the dash, i found that the factory brackets that should be in the center console are broken off or missing. So now there is nothing for the installation kit to screw into, it is just a big hole in the car. I'm guessing that this is why the trim plate that says "performance sound" is loose on the bottom also. What should I do? Right now the radio is just sitting in hole loosely with nothing to attach to. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

get a jy center console and swap it in. or you could fab up a new section with some steel strapping. you know the ones with the holes all drilled in it. you could take some strips of alum and cut them to size and drill holes where needed for attaching. you could get some alum angle and do the same drill holes bol it to what is left in the console and then attache the radio. easy way is jy console but it could be corected, take the console out of the car and fab up you parts easier if its on a bench rather than fighting with it in the car.

My car had the same problem. I tried to fix it with metal straps but didn't work all that well. I was kind of pissed off, my epoxy didn't hold to the 17 year old composite/plastic at ALL. If my epoxy would've held, it would've been easy. It almost seemed to melt the plastic

Anyways, I was considering going with a custom box there, but I like the stock look and couldn't make anything to match. I guess if I ever re-do the interior all custom I could make it look cool, but I really don't want to invest the time/money into that. I wouldn't mind a remote installation and stuff, but that's a lot of wire extending. Maybe I will whenever I end up buying a new head unit.

I think the Camaro got the better radio/AC controls mounting area. The Camaro setup seems a lot more stable than the bird setups..

When I got my T/A the factory radio was already very loose in the console -- If I took the plastic surrounding off, I could take the entire radio out. I bought a new head unit and the install kit for it, but like you, there was nothing to secure the kit to the car. It is possible to do, because me and my dad worked 4 hrs. putting it in. The only extra materials we used were screws (into the console) and cardboard to get the desired height once the head unit 'shell' was in. It would've taken less time if the dumb kit wasn't so cheap. We had to use the grinder just to make the kit materials go together. It just takes time to get it in securely and look good. Here is what mine ended up looking like:
