Need help installing new Alpine headunit

Hey all,

I spent all of yesterday completely gutting the interior of my '89 Iroc. It was a complete success, minus all but two of the seatbelt bolts- they're in the car so tight!

Anyways, I'm confused as hell when it comes to wiring up my headunit. I thought it was going to be simple- pull the old one, match the colors of the wires from the harness to the new one, and crimp everything in place. The problem is that my wiring harness has had some work done to it (every single wire is crimped to another wire at least twice) so it's hard to match up the colors.

My biggest concern right now is the fact that it appears as if there are TWO of each speaker wire... Obviously each speaker has two wires, but then down in the harness, it looks like there are FOUR wires coming from each speaker. I'm really baffled by this. One set of the wires was plugged into the headunit, while the other set was just sitting there- cut at the end- not connected to anything.

Are there supposed to be this many wires? Or did someone do a helluva job messing up my wiring harness?

I'll take pictures soon to help out. Thanks.

First off, do you have the factory plug still in the car? I am talking about the plug that plugs into the factory radio. If this is still in there then all you need to do is go to a car audio shop or even walmart to find an aftermarket plug for your car and it should be easy from there. The after market plug will plug into the factory plug in the car then the aftermarket plug will wire up the the wire harness for the alpine radio. This part is fairly easy since, unless you have a really old radio, the wires from the aftermarket plug and the wires from the radio wire harness should match color to color. THe aftermarket plug costs maybe around $10 and it is a lot easier doing this instead of cutting the factory plug out and trying th hardwire the radio wire harness in. Hope this helps at all.

Yeah I left the plugs on there. What large outlet stores would I be able to pick up an adapter? I was looking around on the Walmart website and I didn't see anything. Would they just not list it on their site? Or would BestBuy have it?

Thanks for the helpful reply.

On walmart.com they dont list everything that they carry. Some of the things on walmart.com are only on walmart.com You should be able to go to either walmart or best buy and find them. I believe the ones at walmart might be a little more than $10 now that I come think about it. I believe they started selling these with the antena adapter included so you dont have to buy this separately. For your antena it more than likely is a mini plug and you need a bigger one to fit the new radio and that is what the antena adapter is for. Hope this helps. Would love to see some pics of what wiring you have in your car right now.

Okay snapped some pictures. Should be high enough quality to identify everything.

First picture: These are the wires that weren't plugged into anything. They were just sitting there, cut. Then I stripped them just in case they needed to be hardwired into anything.

Second picture: These are the three connecters that originally went to the old radio.

Third picture: This is a zoomed out shot that shows you where the first group of wires is in comparison to the second group.

Hope that helps
