custom stereo install question

i always thought that where the heater controls are, would be a much better, exact fit for a standard aftermarket stereo. and somehow locate the heater controls to where the stock stereo is. anyone ever play with this before, do you think it would work?

In order to get the HVAC controls below the reciever, and sit straight, you would need to lengthen some cables, notably the hot/cold lever cable. Also, you would need to cut some space for the reciever, since the pod narrows at the top, and has the border around in the front.
Doable.

We did this to my old '89 RS several years ago. I also modified the center A/C vents to accept a single DIN CD Drive....
The mods for the A/C weren't that bad, just extend the lines toward the end of the cables toward the A/C box, not the panel. That way you can use a solid wire that won't have to be bent all the time......

I will have to check, but I don't think I have any of that setup. I worked as an installer for 6 or 7 years and we did A LOT of stuff to my car in that time. We didn't get pics of most of it. I know where the car is at still and can probably get to it, but I think the guy that bought it from me has pretty much stripped it out. I will check with him to see if the A/C controls are still in the lower opening.
