John (OKFOZ) says you can cut the cord that feeds the power one to use it manually, if I recall his post correctly (in History/Rest)
The non power should at least unscrew. You could fashion a home-style reciever wire (simple speaker wire) for example tucked away behind the radio, mated to the correct factory input. I've done that with somewhat good result. It won't be equal in performance to the mast though

I just hid mine tonight. It went nice and snugly inside the fender. Basically, it was less than a half hour of work since I have an 82 T/A. I pulled the heat vent off the lower part of the fender, unbolted the channel that the wire runs in and removed it completely. I also unbolted the upper part that the antenna screws onto and fed that down into the fender. After pulling the wire out of the heat vent I screwed the antenna back onto the part that attached to the fender and stuffed it into the fender, curving up over the wheel well. it sprung into place and doesn't move because it is at a constant bend. I also noticed I am getting better reception for some reason, at least without moving anything else but the antenna. Now I just need to patch the hole in top of the fender.

I see what you're getting at, for me, it was intended to cut the shaft, as I did and remove the whole antenna. It's too tight though under the wheel well where it sits in the '89.
Any ideas on removal? The service guide doesn't help much. Also, I only loosened the screwed in mounts (also on the internal mast portion and cut the three wires leading into the fender space for the power antenna. This stopped battery drain, of course.
I imagine the antenna is specially modded for the screw in bezel...looking at other Pontiacs near my vintage, they still differ
