ohm question

How do you get 2 ohm, 4 ohm, or 8 ohm? I've seen these terms listed and was wondering how you get specific ohms and what are the benefits? What's the difference between them? Thanks for all advice.

the ohms of a sub/amp setup determine the resistance the amp "sees" which in turn regulates what type of power the amp puts out. If you see a sub that comes in "dual 2 ohm" and "dual 4 ohm" neither one will be louder than the other (with the same power) nor will the sq change. Say you have a sub whos rms rating is 500watts rms and who has dual 4 ohm voice coils, and your amp puts out 500watts rms at 2 ohms. So basically you need
to wire your sub to 2 ohms to give it the proper power. Say your sub was dual 2 voice coils you couldn't get a 2 ohm impendance, so your amp wouldn't put out the 500watts rms it needs...........

1. Less "ohmage" (1ohm vs. 2ohm) = more power, but also strains you amp more (some amps aren't 1ohm stereo)

2. Different ohm variations on a sub only change the impendance the amp sees which determines how much power your amp puts out.

3. When choosing an amp/sub combo make sure you can wire your sub to the right impendance

here's a VERY useful sticky on ca.com.............i use it all the time.

sorry for the long post, hope this helps........
