Put in a CD player and lights wont work

Well i put in a cd player in my GTA. No store was open that had a GM02 connector so we wired it the old fashion way. We think we got everything hooked up right, turned the car on and everything worked fine. I went to turn my lights on before i left and when i did, the cd player would power off and lose all its memory. Now the cd player will play, but only the headlights and overhead interior light will come on. No fog lights, orange lights, side markers, tail lights, or guage lights. Also, the headlights will come up but when i turn the headlights off, the lights will go off, but they won't go down. We checked the fuses, nothing blown. Considered that the lights might have blown, but that doesnt explain why the lights wont go down. We checked to see if maybe we had wires mixed up, but even when we took both hot wires away from the cd player, the lights and headlights still wont work.

Any body have any ideas?

Disconnect the radio ground from the brown wire and reconnect it to the BLACK wire, and replace the 2 or 3 headlight relays that you blew.

Next time wait for a store to open and use a harness.

ya...red is ignition. connect your red/yellow wires to a constant power source like your cig lighter and you shud be ok. I had the same problem on my caddy. I spliced the cig lighter for power into the red(ignition) and yellow(power)...Oh and black is always ground....But you should know that anyway....Speakers are the hardest part but if they arent the same colors or changed throughout the wiring you shouldve been ok.

oh I must agree with Jim though. Always use a harness when available. I had to use the stock harness from the old radio but it worked cuz I would have had to wire it ALL THE WAY TO THE TRUNK????**** that.

Jim was right. It was hooked to the wrong ground wire. But it only blew 1 fuse and that was it.

Harness would have made it a lot easier but we didnt count on it have 2 of everything, but thats what u get for being anxious to put something in.

Speakers weren't hard at all. All we did was take the covers off and see what wires ran to each one.

You're lucky you only blew a fuse. When I did it I blew a fuse and all 3 headlight relays.

ya wiring harness are good if you know your gonna sell the car in the future or something. Then you hook up your stock radio again and not make it look half assed.

Kinda happened to me once. I had wired the radio with out a connector (since they were gone already), and when I put the stock radio back in to sell the car, the driving lights (orange ones) were on all the time!

When I put in my new CD player (cause the factory one burned up), I tried using a harness....until the entire unit got so hot I couldn't hold it. I looked closer at it, and the yokum who'd owned it before me had tried bridging the rear speakers together. Key word there being "Tried"
