Is 134.9 SPL good for a single 10" ?
Is 134.9 SPL good for a single 10" ?
Well I was at my first "SPL Competition" hosted at a show and shine in Guelph this past weekend.
Was a fun weekend to say the least.
I was wondering if this setup was pretty good in my thirdgen, and if its possible to get it going a little higher...
Pulled off a 134.9SPL for one go at it which was kinda neat. Friend told me that it was puttering around 65-75 before the bass on the song kicked in and then it shot up to 132.5 then 134.9. That was only playing at volume level 30 and gain on the HU at 2, still could go up to volume 50 but it's unbearable after 30 (dont like loud music that much...) and distorts at around 35-40 depends on the music/sounds.
My setup includes...
4x Infinity Kappa 4x6" speakers
2x Planet Audio 5 1/4" speakers in Bose ported boxes
1x JBL 1000Watt 10" sub in MDF box that fills the entire trunk well
1x GTO 75.2 JBL Amp, bridged to 4 ohm powering just the sub
JVC AVX-1 head unit (runs ~20W RMS on each channel)
Basically all the JBL stuff is all this years new models.
What do you guys think?

Can someone please explain to me what frequencies they measure you on? To be fair, it seems that everyone would have to use the same thing... otherwise, why couldn't I just play a 100hz tone at 180db or something rediculous...
It should be how loud your system is at... I don't know.. 30hz or something... For everyone who claims a certain decibel measurement.

Well, you've got the right idea, they stopped people from High Noting, but you've still got some room to play with.
alot of people tune their subwoofer setups to ~50hz, because it will mic. harder, but it's absolutely unlistenable everyday.

Well its interesting to hear the different takes and various ideas/setups.
A lot of the people in the SPL competition had doors rattling, panels vibrating. It was nasty. Im not much for loud music but more of a sound quality when it comes to music. Thats how my system has been tuned to produce the sharpest notes and blend overall within the car. It's relaxing sometimes to just sit in the car and listen to music while you cruise on the highway for any great length of time.
But the highest in the single 10" competition was 147.9SPL
Probably like you said, tuned it specifically to some special frequency with the right CD/Audio track and away they went. Probably had a bigger amp as well, who knows.
It was fun to say the least just to see what the new deck could slam out. I was hard of hearing after I got out of the car haha

hell... I bet my 6x9s could dish out 150db @ 900hz! I win the Smaller-than-8"-contest!
I'll take that in 10's and 20's, thank you.
