Can speakers stop putting out bass? Or deck/amp problem
I've got the factory speakers in my '89. 6x9 in the back. Powered with a small Pioneer amp (GM-X372 240W 2ch). The deck is an Alpine CDA-9847
A few days ago I noticed that the bass tones coming out of the 6x9 diminished severely. No distortion, but when I crank the bass up on the deck, it's not nearly coming out of the speakers as it used to.
I checked the settings on the amplifier and they are in the same position as I last left them.
Do/can speakers just lose bass output without sounding blown/distorted?

The settings in the deck are set to give the 6x9 more bass.... my point is... something changed... and now there is less bass.
I know it's not window vibrating bass but that's what I've got in my '89 which is my daily.
I can pull the panel and check to see if it's moving.

Did the upgraded speakers solve the problem? What did you have before the upgrade?

if it's all-the-sudden, I've got two thoughts...
1) the solder connection came off of one of the speakers to the main woofer voice coil (which at that point, there'd be ZERO bass coming from this speaker,) or...
2) if both 6x9s are doing it, (all-the-sudden,) then it can be your headunit...

Hopefully that's it. The headunit is only a few months old, and my first experiance with Alpine.

before the i put in the alpines, there was these really crappy polk audio speakers in there from one of the previouis owners. the alpines instantly sounded better, but now i am thinking of going with pioneer for teh 4x6s. im pretty sure its just my head unit cant power them well enough for their power range. so an amp is definitely in the near future for my car. if only it could happen tomorrow when i get paid....

Could be that a power supply cap popped in the head...could really be the case if this product line has known issues.
If you pull the head and take it to a friendly Best Buy, they may be able to test it for you for free.

Power supply cap wouldn't cause this. Could be the HU though. Try and put the old 6x9s in. Check and double check ALL the HU settings. Again, is the 6x9 portion of the speaker moving? It is both sides, right? Did you have BBE on before? Is it still on? Are you amping the rear speakers or running then off of the HU?

I'm referring to a PS cap integral to the head's internal MOSFET amp. Seems only halfway likely, but still possible.
