Which terminal is which?

Figures, I threw out my instructions. Does anyone know which tab on my kenwood 6x9s is which? + or -. There is a narrow one and a wider one. I think I have them wired 180 deg off. I have the - on the wide one and then + on the narrow one.

I got these speakers from a friend, no wires on them

Are the speakers supposed to make a big pop and do their max excursion when the amp kicks on? That is what made me think they are wired wrong.

Typically if the speaker has a wide and narrow terminal, then the wide one is positive.

I agree with Rez, but when in doubt, find a 9 volt battery and touch it to the terminals. If the cone jumps up, you've got the + side of the battery on the + terminal. If the cone jumps in, then you've got the + of the battery on the - terminal.

Any non-powered speaker you catch doing that has in all probability nothing to do with the speaker. The electronics do not exist in a non-powered speaker to do this on its own. My guess is your amp is sending this signal down the line -- probably always has, but you just now noticed it. How often in the past did you actually watch your speakers when the amp turned on?
