sub choice

I currntly have 2 orion xtr3 10" DVC subs in a sealed seperate chamber box, running off a kenwood 920 watt 2 channel amp, the speakers just dont cut it for me. ANyone have any input on doing the 12" L7, 12" Comp VR, 12" HX2 in a ported box, using just 12 speaker?? Im thinking it shoudl sound hella better than current setup.

Everybody is going to have their own opinion, and this is mine....

If you want LOUD, but horrible SQ, do the L7. I personally would not do the RF either. If the HX2 is old series with the pulp cone, I would consider it. The newer Fosgates are junk.

The Comp VR's rock and dont sound bad. Every system I have heard with Kicker Comps or Comp VRs has impressed me. Of your listed choices, definitely the Comp VR (but, again, it depends what you are looking to accomplish).

Keep in mind that a GOOD box is every bit as important as your woofer choice for loud output and SQ. Also, a misadjusted amp or HU settings can ruin results as well.

Rockford T2's are by NO means the best subs out at the moment. Maybe for SPL but your ears aren't SPL meters. JL Audio, Resonant Engineering, Kicker, Polk, Phoenix Gold (NOT the Octane series), or my local favorite Credence (the old factory that made Kicker in Kentucky) are all good sub choices. The new Rockford subs are a joke, they're the likes of Audiobahn with massive plastic covers on the magnets and such. The T2's are geared for SPL competition and aren't SQ subs don't fall for the sales pitch, your ears can't really tell the difference past 130db get good SQ and it'll make you smile.

just for info. the rf t2's are not spl woofers the only spl woofer rf made was the trf2215 wich they dont make anymore. and i agree that spl woofers are not good for music, only for strait bass competition.

Fosgate sucks, amps and subs. My buddy bought some fosgate subs at $250 a peice or something stupid like that and a 1000watt fosgate amp and it all sounds like crap. My 2 xtant subs and 400watt kicker amp sound way better then that crap.

or they just suck. Our boxes are same quality and it's not too tough to hook up subs.

New Fosgate sucks, they over rate about everything, I've seen the corners of the P2 cones crack; I've melted an HE2 15 with 400 watts from a Fosgate amp, there quality's no longer. Xtant is some of the best equipment you can buy so is Kicker, Fosgate's still ok but it's more midline equipment anymore.

fosgate stuff puts out at least rated power, always has. used to put out WAY more than rated power, back int he mid 90's they were awesome. these days, their quality has fallen off but the prices have stayed the same or gotten higher. its not BAD stuff, but there is much better for less money.

MTX is ghetto as well, but I bet a JL audio 1000watt amp with a w7 would whoop your fosgate, or at least be as good.

I'll just repeat what everyone else said- ROCKFORD SUCKS!
Seriously, they used to have quality stuff. I know a few kids with Rockford stuff in their cars and once they hear my Alpine or JL systems they just kind of . If you're happy with Rockford than more power to you! All we're trying to say is that it's far from the best equipment out there.

no, it wouldnt. i'd be amazed if it did half the power. jl's use regulated power supplies, so they stay about the same power no matter the voltage, they're underrated a bit so probably see 1100-1200 rms out of one. the fosgate will do at least 3kw, probably more like 33-3400. like i said they aren't a bad company, but you can get better equipment a lot cheaper. almost any decent dual 15 setup with proper power in a good box will crush a 13w7.

Unlike most of the above posts as to which is better don't let them fool you. It takes a good install to make good sound. While the peices you put into it will affect the outcome some the ability to install is about 90% of how good it is. True if you get total crap that is built terrible you won't get good sound. Do your homework on the build quality reputations for the stuff your buying and also look into the this such as power needs and box sizes needed. Put a good sub in the wrong box and it will sound sound like crap same goes for mids and tweets. Listen to as many different speakers as you can. Especially the mids and tweets as the subs will change dramatically in a vehicle.

As to what you should buy, I won't answer as I'm a ealer and am biased to what I sell. Here is a good post to read https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=336240

have you checked into many internet brands? soundsplinter, resonant engineering, stereo integrity, (a magnum would do you nicely) all have awesome subs in your pricerange. im running 2 soundsplinter rl-p 12's in a sealed box off 1000 watts rms each, and they pound, but sound incredible doing it, best sound quality i've ever heard from a car sub.

Only on this board can you find people thrash on JL, MTX, Kicker and Rockford, then defend their Volfenhag and Audiobahn system.

I second that and will add elemental designs to the list. All the aforementioned companies produce great products and all have extremely good reputations (with the possible exception of ED but that's more on the HR end than the product end). You will be able to buy from any of these companies and stay well below $300 total if you want to. They will also have the best quality product out of those listed.

JL – JL makes good stuff, no question about it. If they were cheaper there's no question about me running two 12w7's in the back of my bird.

Finally, try to avoid e-bay and unauthorized dealers if there's any chance at all that you might blow the sub unless you're willing to pay for the company to recone it for you. This is another perk of the internet companies - ebay prices and three year warranties.
