Ran into a problem

Well I put in my 6x9s perfect...not a problem in the world...so Im thinking 'awesome...should be together in no time' . We'll...I was falsly informed for a 5.25 in the door...so I take the right door panel off...it goes down hill from here...so I figure Ill move on to the dash. Remove the dashpad...and which I know hate chevy for the top screws in the dashpad...I wanted to bust my front window out so bad. So the dasgpad comes off...everything looks fine, I mount the tweeters to the dashpad...run the wiring. everything seems ok, mount the 4x6 in the right side...have to push the air vent a little, but no biggy...all the AC stuff will be coming out shortly anyway. SO now thats done...and go to mount the left 4x6 and notice a problem...the damn plastic peice which holds the speedo and stuff wont budge...so pretty much Im ****ed on the left side dash speaker.

I know its all my fault, and I should of checked mounting depths, Ive just never had to worry about mounting depths too much.

Anyway, is there a way to mount a speaker there...just find one with a lower mounting depth I guess?

One comes there from factory so there's defantly a way to mount one there

I wasn't aware of a clearance issue with the gauge cluster, let alone a clearance issue in a rock. Rocks have a ton more clearance than birds on that side due to a diffrent vent layout, according to variuos board members.

How much extra clearance do you need? You might be able to shim the speaker up enough to be able to install it. There is a decent amount of room under the dash pad. Just beweare that you will also need to allow some room for speaker excursion.

Finally, running 4x6's and door speakers/tweeters is not very advisable. It will kill your sound stage, bla bla bla. This seems to be an ongoing topic in many a thread right now. Sorry for not tying out the same thing again

Try just the door speakers/tweeters without the 4x6s. That should sound better than having sound bouncing off the windshield anyway. Besides even the best 4x6s really don't produce that amazing a sound IMO. They will also reach the point of distortion well before your door speakers.

One comment on the dash pad: I have no problems getting mine off using a long phillips. The extra reach works wonders.

so wait, you're mounting 4x6s and tweeters? That's going to create more problems than it solves. Stick with a decent pair of 4x6s until you get the motivation/cash to upgrade.

Anyway, there should be AMPLE room for any 4x6 on the market to fit on that driver's side. I even fit my Boston 746 plates in there with room to spare, and they take up more room than any 4x6 I've used. You should be able to take the stock 4x6 brackets out of the car, mount the 4x6 to those brackets, then reinstall the whole bracket.

I fit either 5-1/4" or 5-1/2" (don't remember which) in that dash location and I had to remove the dash cluster and use my dremel to cut a little arc in the top of the back plastic piece to clear the magnets. I had to cut everywhere to make round speakers fit, but this is all that applies to your situation. Just remove the factory speaker and "eyeball" the cluster. Remove it (only a few screws) and cut away. I had to cut an arc about 3" wide x 1" deep and only had to cut about 1/4" into the cluster. All's good...

About the door speakers, I have 6.5s, with relatively small magnets, in my doors (with power windows). I DID have to make a spacer out of 3/4" mdf. I sanded down the corners so make it match the interior molding. Looks good, I get compliments for its stock look. Sound is ok (because the speakers aren't anything special).

Some pics.

You most likely will have to space out the speaker to make it fit in the door.

You could do that if you like that sort of look. Most 6.5s won't fit unless you build the door out a lot farther though.
