Hi all. I was just wondering if people could post some pics of their amp-rack setups. I'm going to be construction one shortly, and just like to look what others have done in the past, to see if there's anywhere I could improve on my design.

My JBL amp soaks up the sun on my back deck, and then it doesn't turn on until it cools down. I think if it were another color aside from black, it would help, but hey... I can't complain. It was cheap, mostly reliable power. But I'm planning to incorporate some fans into my design to help cool it down on those hot FL days. And maybe sometime in the future, I'll finally get that back window tinted!

 

Stick em in the back seat I'm not taking credit for the idea but so far I've got the only rear seat apart pictures so I will link you to my build thread.







Other locations involve installing behind the plastic trim in the hatch (under the cardboard glove box thing and instead of the spare tire).

 

I think I'm going to leave them on the back deck. I don't have any use of that area anyway. I'm not going to put my t-tops there because they'll hit my sub.

Question though... how are you planning on ventilating your amps? Seems like a good option for hiding them, but I can't seem to think of a good way to let them breathe.

I know I've seen pics in sub-install threads before of some people's amp racks... no one else?

 

Both amps run extremely cool and I'm running them at relatively high ohm loads (2 for the monoblock and 4 for the two channel) so that helps things further. If you look at the backside of your back seat you will see that it sticks up a pretty decent amount. The amps will be able to vent there and that's probably more than adequate. Not 100% stealth since about 5” of amp will be showing but pretty close. You defiantly won’t find them unless you’re looking for them.

 

I think I could get away with that type of install for my eclipse amp, but definitely not for my JBL. That thing runs hot, and I'm running it at 1 ohm. With the sun coming through the back hatch, it heats the amp up enough for it to go into protection, until some cooler air gets blown across it for a little while. On the trip from PA to FL, I had my car jam packed with stuff. And I tried building this stand out of plywood to go over the amps, so that I could set stuff on top of them, and make some use of the back hatch area... I left about a 1.5-2" gap between the top of the amp and the bottom of the plywood, and the fugger still overheated, and went into protection. I can't complain too much... ya get what you pay for. I needed some cheap power, and that's what I got. I'm hoping sometime in the future to get a JL or Rockford amp. For now, I'm hoping this amp rack, with some fans running, will help cool the amps.

You guys that have the "behind the seat" amp installs... do you ever have people riding in your backseat? Just wondering if the pressure from someone sitting there has any negative impact.

 

well i opened up the whole back seat and then used 3/4" mdf for backing with 1.5" of foam then i stood up on the things with my 200+ lbs self
and it held up fine so i never gave it a second thought
