Subwoofer repair

My 12" sub has developed a rip in the foam outer ring. Its not a tear that I could glue it together to keep it from spreading, some pieces did fall off. Its like a gash thats about 2"x1/8". Is there a way to fix it? I love my JL and I don't throw it away.

Thanx!

yes you can, but it looks ****ty as hell and wont hold up long. if your despirate you can use some silicon caulk. it will hold it together and it flexes. but like anything else if it flexes too much it will break, or come undone in this instance. your best bet it so junk the sub and go get a new one

Many places sell refoam kits. I've refoamed a few woofers, and if you take your time it's not really too hard.

This is where I buy mine from:
Speaker Parts - Newfoam, Speaker Repair, Speaker Parts, Speaker Foam, Replacement Speakers

The site is hoakey, but the business is a storefront business in Rochester NY that's been there for years. I was there very often when I was in college, and I still make sure to stop in from time to time when I'm in the area. The owner, though he assumes everybody is speaker-stupid, is extremely knowledgable and helpful. Though when I used to deal with audio-noobs on a daily basis, I used to treat them all like they were stupid too

His kits will come with the new foam, new dust caps, voice coil shims, and glue.

What you do is cut the dust cap off the woofer so that you can access the voice coil. You jam the shims into the voice coil gap to ensure that it stays centered when you remove the rest of the foam. Once the foam is completely removed, you glue in the new one. Once the glue dries, you can remove the voice coil shims, then glue the new dust cap on. It's time consuming, but pretty easy.

You can send that woofer to JL and have it reconed for a flat rate, and it will be just like new.
