Need help with choosing an amp
Hey there,
This isnt for my formula, but actually for my truck. Its a 87 f150. I hope you can all still help out, I have very limited knowlege when it comes to car audio. I just bought a set of 6x9 speakers. They are pioneer 5-ways, they are 460 max watts and 80 RMS power. I know I should mostly worry about the RMS power.
I have 6.5 pioneer 3 ways in the doors, but ill just let the headunit power them. Now onto the amps, I need to get a 2-channel one, correct? Should I be looking for amps with a RMS power rating thats higher or lower then the RMS of the speakers? Any amp suggestions would be great also?
One more thing, my truck didnt come from the factory with back speakers, so there isnt a housing for them or anything. I saw they made boxes for 6x9s, so I planned on picking them up. Anyone ever deal with these, any bad thoughts about them?

Yes, you can let the head unit power the front speakers and a two channel amp can power the rear speakers but look at a 4 channel amp. the reason is that they are just a bit more expensive than 2 channel amps and it will make those front speakers really sing! I am asuuming that you have a standard cab F150. So speaker boxes should fit ok without having you move the seat up much if at all. It is just that the mids and highs will not be as clear. If anything I would run the fronts off the amp and the 6X9's off the head unit. You might lose out on a little bass but... Thats why I recommend a 4 channel amp. It just lets things get loud!! Anyway, a 50X2 or up amp will really let your speakers rock. Just remember that your musical tastes can dictate how your soeakers sound. Are you heavy into rap? if so, skip the 6X9's and buy a sub. Or since you are buying an amp, get a 4 channel amp and a sub. Power the front speakers off the front 2 channels and bridge the rear two to the sub. I have done this set up for people many times. Or buy ... Whoa!! I just reread your posting and saw that you already bought those 6X9's. OK. Also since most amps are 2 ohm stable you could power all 4 speakers off a 2 channel amp. That is actually what I would do. The 6X9's would provide some respectable low bass. As for brands, a reputable amp brand is the way to go. Quality not quantity. I try to stay out of this brand is the best. Lanzar is very reasonable in cost from Partsexpress.com. Rockford fosgate, Phoenix gold. I would most likey stay away from Sony or any of the 800 WATTS Thump power or any other cheesey advertising gimicky brand. Good Luck!

yea man..thanks alot for you help. I went ahead and bought a 60x4 Pioneer amp to power all 4 speakers. I dont listen to rap very much and im not a big fan of huge amounts of bass, the 6x9s should be plenty of bass for me.

One thing i noticed about this amp in the description is that the front and rear channels can be adjusted independently. Is that a common feature for multi-channel amps, because almost none of the other amp descriptions included this.
