What are your opinions on these speakers? Im up at school and dont know any stores around here to check out speakers. My roomates car broke down and hed be willing to sell these to me for pretty cheap. I really want some better sound than what I have right now, but it doesnt have to be great. Right now, one 6x9 is missing, the other sounds pretty bad, and both 4x6s are blown. So im not trying to make a nice system, just trying to get everything sounding decent and being able to crank it a bit. I have an aiwa head unit too. And by the way, I listen to rock/metal. I only get picky with sound quality when recording my band, setting up for concerts, etc. but just for tunes in the car it doesnt matter too much to me. Thanks a lot.

well 6 X 9's in general dont sound that good compared to a decent round speaker, but then Im sure that they will sound better than your one fubar'd 6 X 9 you have now.

I just installed a pair of Pioneer TS-A6961R's, I backed them with a 4 way amp that puts out 60W RMS per channel. They sound pretty damn good for a mid range 6x9. I've never really heard a difference in quality between 6x9's and 6.5's, but 6x9's hit a lot harder.

Re: 220 watt pioneer 3 way 6x9s.

I run a pair of TS-A690R speakers in my 79 Z28 (they are the only speakers and are paired with a kicker 600w amp) and they sound amazing. I also think I pulled a pair of the 220w TS-A 3 ways out of my 84 and they sounded pretty similar in the 10seconds of listening to them, though the 220w were not fully installed, just plugged in. I'd pick them up, if you don't like them you can get a better pair later. But I guarantee they will be better than a pair of blown speakers.

This is a good read regarding round vs ovals

I picked up some of the 3-way 6x9 Pioneers at Best Buy and after some tweaking they can really pump out the bass even without an amp! Of course I also procured a set of the original baffles (and coated them with some Flex Seal!) so that probably helps too.
