Ok if your car has the orignal wire harness you will need

METRA 70-1677-1- adapter for the 84 wire harness (12 pin)
METRA 71-1858-adapter to fit the 2002 stereo (21 pin)
METRA 40-GM20- antenna adapter

For the pod some need trimming some dont but you coud put the original back in one day and it would be fine.

I got those from www.installer.com. If you have an 88/89 or newer I think its a plug and play. Not sure which year they changed to a 21 pin

 

I purchased a stock Delco stereo for my 84 Camaro from EBAY. It had a 3.5 jack installed on the amp. When I went to install it I found that on my console there is an installation bracket to the back where I suppose the screw on the back of the unit goes. Then on the unit itself there are two bolts, one on each side, but no bracket on the console. On the front of my console there are four bolt holes where I think my old unit must have attached, but no place on the new unit to thread into. Clear as mud?

So what I've read on this thread is my unit uses a sliding bracket and the console uses a "ears" bracket. And by stock Delco, I mean from a 86 or 87 possibly later.

What are my options? Is there a bracket I can get? or do I have to get the correct console for the new unit? My aftermarket stereo used a faceplate that fit the four front facing bolt holes but it stuck out a few inches and there's no way that faceplate will slide over the new unit. Believe it or not, I like the look of the stock unit and it works with the restoration of my car.

 

If you scroll back up to where I posted mine, you'll see how the "wings" screw into the plate of the radio pod. I had to get a drill and a drill-bit that would fit the screw and just made my own holes. once you get it seated your face plate for your car should mount flush with the radio.

 

for those that have put in the newer stereo's with the theft lock in them , how did you get them to work

 

Mine has the bolts on the side of the unit. So I'm guessing thats the "rail" type of bracket. I don't have any "wings" I guess I'll have to build a bracket or find a donar car with a console that has one.

 

I think I need something like this bracket. It has the slide mount bracket but also the wings. Just need to find it in DIN 1/2.

 

that is a 1 1/2 din to a single din faceplate. you will have to drill holes in the side of the radio to mount the brackets.

 

Actually, this is a case of me not thinking before I post. All I needed were the two small brackets that turn in a 45 degree angle to the console. They weren't on the stereo, so I didn't visualize it.

Has anyone tried to put the GM navigation radio into a third gen?

 

I tried the links, but those all point to DOUBLE-DIN, not DIN and a HALF.....

 

I finally have 4 working speakers w/ CD capbility!

Went with the Pioneer DEHP77DH 1.5 Din. Damn near the same size as the delco unit--so no uglyu spacer required.

Bought Infinity Kappas for speakers too. It's pretty good considering its no high end systme with subs/amps.

Not as good as my Cobalt though!

But at least I can cruise the highway with the T-tops off and HEAR music if I want

 

Anything up to 02 should work if the plug looks similar

 

did you get kappa 4X6 dash speakers? did they fit fine in there? I was thinking about these but heard they wouldnt fit. Do you have any pics of the pioneer in the car? would love to check it out.

 

the only fitment problem was on the driver side---required some cutting of the plastic under the dash.

they seemed higher end to me--so I bought them. But you'll have Alpine, JBL and Pioneer guys saying their the best. I am no audio expert however.

 

I swear by the infinity kappa series, they're one of the best sounding speakers on the market... the infinity reference series (a little cheaper) is pretty good too.

 

Hey everyone, Just an update on my situation. I have a Monsoon stereo out of a 2000 or 2001 Camaro SS. My car is a 1992 Z28. Here is what anyone installing a 4th Gen Camaro Monsoon needs to know before they put it in a 91/92 Camaro.

1. In order to remove the frame plate that borders the stereo/AC-Heat-Defroster slider thing you also need to remove the underside of the dash. Its kinda a PITA because its much harder to remove/re-install than the actual frame plate thing. (I know this isn't very clear, but anyone with a 91/92 Camaro will know how the underside of the dash/gauges covers the top left screw of the frame plate so it needs to be removed)

2. The side brackets on a 00/01 Camaro radio don't quite match up with the bracket holes from our stock stereos. 1 Hole on each side does, however, match up so you can screw the radio in it will just be held in place by 1 screw on each side instead of 2. Alternatively, you can fabricate your own side brackets for the Monsoon Stereo or you can drill another hole on each side of the stock pod so that you can mount it with 2 screws on each side.

3. A Monsoon stereo out of a 00/01 Camaro doesn't fit in the 91/92 Radio pod. It is alittle deeper and hits the back of the pod on the left side. Thus, a dremel is needed to grind the left rear area of the pod (deep down in the console/dash) to make room.

I didn't finish the install because I dont have a dremel yet so I just put my stock radio back in until I get a dremel.

1 question for everyone who did have to do some dremeling... How much did you have to take off before the Monsoon fit in?

 

That is my problem. I have a tape/cdchanger control headunit from a '97-02 SS (no idea what year) that has that stupid fan in the back. I CANNOT get the radio flush to put the radio bezel back on. I literally lack ¼ of an inch--or smaller. I do not want to cut into my console's heater ducts. I used my Dremel and made the mounting holes wider so it can use the stock hole mounts--that works perfectly. The stock wiring harness fits right in too, its just the heater ducts that are the problem here.

I've seen a heat gun used effectively to soften defrost ducting in the dash where fitment was an issue, maybe the same could be done inside the radio pod while being careful not to melt the insulation off some of the wiring in there.

 

That screw on my 92 Camaro is a fake screw, if you remove the other three the frame slides right out. And I've been wanting to get a newer GM CD player for my car, do any of them have buttons that are more square? The rounded kind just don't look right in the squared console.

 

Does anyone know if the gta steering controls work with the newer decks?

 

Just a picture of my Monsoon deck. The flash kind of distorts how it looks. In the picture the colors look slightly different (and they are...slightly), but its much less noticable in person and it looks factory.

(More) Points worth noting:

1. It sounds great!
2. This stereo is considerably more powerful than our stock ones...with the bass and treble turned all the way down, my speakers still vibrate on most songs at a fairly low-moderate level.
3. The "3" and "6" preset buttons along with the AM/FM and CD/AUX buttons no longer have working backlights so at night you can't see them as well. Don't know how that happened since the radio is from an 01 SS and the car only had 30k miles when it was taken out.

(1) Theftlock CD player with cassette slave deck and slave harness
(1) Monsoon Pontiac cassette deck with slave CD deck and slave harness
(1) Chevy? (all dark plastic w/no grey buttons) CD slave deck with slave harness
(2) 89+ generic cassette radios, satin black faces with bass and treble
(2) Pre 89 generic cassette radios, satin black faces with bass and treble
(1) S-10 style cassette deck with bass and treble
Steel ash tray from camaro and a lighter from an 73-87 pickup

Howd I do? Still have yet to test the radios and slave decks. Hopefully none of them have theftlock activated. I dont feel like f'ing around with those

 

I just did this install,99 Blazer AM/FM CD into 83 Z28.Easiest radio install I have ever done.Fit perfectly.All wiring was the same color.Someone had cut out the plug from the Camaro,so I just matched up the wire colors from the "new" radio pigtail and presto.Only other thing I had to do was modify the antenna plug as I did not want to wait for an adapter.$35 bucks and I have tuneage.Jeff

 

Whats the deal with "Theft Lock" I got an idea of what it is but how would you unlock it?

I checked out those links and saw that they were 2 din radios (and both looked very nice). Will those units fit then, as the openings in our cars are 1.5 din. I am wondering if there is enough space in the radio pod opening but the bezel might obscure some of the buttons. Has anyone tried this and have any pictures? Otherwise the only currently made after market unit I found was a Pioneer unit DEH-P77DH, which is nice looking but won't play mp3 burned on cds. I must saw though the new 2 din kenwood and pioneer units are very sleek and would look nicest.

 

Hey guys, I just a 2001 Monsoon Cd player unit off ebay that I am about to install, but I have two questions.
1) Do I need to modify the radio pod internals to get it to fit?
I went to test fit it buy pushing the harness wires out of the way and it seems a little too deep, I couldn't get it to lay flush. I know it is deeper than the old stock unit, but do I have to modify the ducts or the triangular plastic support bracket to fit it in? It has an overhang that sticks out further than the old unit. Also you all posted that the mounting tabs need to be ground down a bit.

2) About aux inputs
The unit has the 9-pins on the back to go to a factory cd changer. I stopped off at a local audio shop to find out about getting the GM harness to go from the 9-pins output to rca to a stereo jack to play off an mp3 player. They said I would need the harness ($20) AND a module ($70) to link the mp3 to the radio. Sound right, or do I just need the harness?

Unfortunatly that 9 pin plug will not work for an mp3 input. The radio needs to have cd changer controls for it to work or else you have no way to turn on the 9 pin harness to play the mp3. None of the single cd players that fit our cars have cd changer controls on them only the cassette decks had cd changer controls. You can tell if it has controls by looking at the cd/play button. If it just says cd/play and not cd/aux then it is NOT cd changer controls, you need one with cd/aux to activate that 9 pin plug and switch between cd and mp3.

I recently went to install a 2001 Pontiac Monsoon stereo headunit in my 89 Formula. The new headunit it 5-3/4 inches deep as opposed to the 5inches of the old unit. The support system is simply four screws and the plastic block in the radio pod that accepts the locating pin of the headunit.
To install the new unit, as was indicated on the tread the locating tabs need trimming. The pod is deep enough, but due to the position that the wiring harness plugs into the unit, it hits the plastic block in the pod. The plastic block needs to be trimmed by cutting off the left side to give the harness room. The locating pin can hole can be left in place. Also the holes in the locating tabs didn't need to be redilled, they can be lined up and the screws used.

Hey guys i have a 87 T/A with the digital dash i installed a newer radio from a 98 pontiac bonneville. the red matches the dash perfect. Had problems with mounting brackets but no hard wiring problems. plays and sounds great. just my 2 cents.

 

I just noticed today as I was installing a portable sirius radio that my 01 C5 CD theft lock Delco Radio (like the ones pictured in this thread) fit perfectly into my 91 bird...even the plug plugged right in and the attenna...only problem is that it will not power up.

Do I need some special harness adaptor to make the radio work?

It looks like the same old run of the mil Delco CD theftlock players that are in almost every GM....just can't get it to power on. Could it have something to do with the fact that the C5 uses a Bose system...there are no obvious Bose marks on the deck.....just on the speakers inside the Vette.

stick to an f body deck and you'll be fine, match brand to brand for color correctness. 93-02 will play just about any cd but obviously not mp3 format. just use a good cd and you'll be fine. i've had 4 different ones in my thirdgens with no issues. if you can find a deck reasonable they are a great upgrade and sound better then many cheap aftermarket units.

 

Hey thankx to all you guys who posted about 4th gen decks in 3rds gen cars, I did the same this past summer (Aug 2008). Using a 99 Grand Prix CD unit inside a 87 GTA w/ digital dash....I thing it looks F***en Great. Too all those People, THANK YOU.

 

just finished putting mine in from an 02 avalanche. had to use the dremel on the vents. took the radio back out and put the a/c chrome duct tape and formed it to fit the hole and still give space. i think it looks great. also added a scosche adapter so that i could hook the amp up the the rear speakers in the back in the well.

 

Why is the radio being locked by theftloc a big deal? It takes 10min tops to unlock it as long as you or someone you know has a phone.

Also older steering wheel controls will not work with newer GM radios.
