Re: Aftermarket Speakers in Bose Kick Panels
I just finished doing this, I had some 5.25 components jammed under my dash and bose kick panels from my last car. The passenger side accepted the mid with very minimal opening of the hole and drilling a hole for the tweeter, I mounted the crossover on top of it. The driver side is shallow so I cut a piece of wood to build it up, sealed it to cover the curve and installed the speaker. The nice thing is that it does not take up as much room as other kicks I've seen and sounds good. I will post some pics tommorrow.

Here are the pictures. The driver side crossover fit on the top inside of the kick panel. I still need some grills and a little more carpet but overall I am happy. The panels were red that I sprayed with some black Krylon fusion. You could speaker cloth over all of it to make it more 'stealth.'

Re: Aftermarket Speakers in Bose Kick Panels
There are a couple of things I noticed about this set up.
1. The kicks need an amp. When they same speakers were under the dash the deck was enough. I only have one amp for the sub. I wired up the kicks to the amp and it was loud enough. I didn't have any bass so I switched it back.
2. They sound 'boomy'. I just last night tried putting in some poly fill to take that away to no avail. The bose enclosures look like they are designed to move air around the back and it makes it sound poor when turned up, even with the amp on it.
I think better equipment would help and sealing the ports, which I might try next.

Re: Aftermarket Speakers in Bose Kick Panels
I doubt you'll find any that will fit without some modification, at least any that are worth the effort to install. I got a 4" Kicker installed inside the passenger side using a dremel, but had to cut and install from the outside on the driver's side. Then re-covered with carpet.

Re: Aftermarket Speakers in Bose Kick Panels
The bose speakers on the kickpanels are 3 1/2 or 3 1/4.I dont remember anymore, but i put cerwin vega 3 1/2 inch tweeters.I just wanted more highs in the front to fill the dash area.Plus the CWs are about i 1 1/2 high so they fit with in the encloser with no cutting at all. Also the bose speakers have only 3 mounting points.Unlike aftermarket which have 4.So i had to make little brackets to secure the CWs to the inside of the kickpanel.

I got them on ebay, but they are only tweeters, not full or mid range speakers, just tweeters.

Re: Aftermarket Speakers in Bose Kick Panels
Crutchfield does not list any speakers that fit the kick panels even when selecting the bose Option.
However, they do sell a bunch of 3 1/2" and 4" speakers. Does any one know the actually depth of the original Bose speakers? And has anyone measure the ohms of Bose speakers, there seems to be some differences.

Re: Aftermarket Speakers in Bose Kick Panels
You're not using the Bose head unit so you probably won't want to mess with trying to save the little amps in these kicks. A modern deck will put out more than these baby Bose amps.
You've got the kicks, right? Open one up and have a look. Take it with you to a stereo place. Decide which speaker to put in that BEST fits. You're going to have to cut if you put in anything worthwhile.

Re: Aftermarket Speakers in Bose Kick Panels
I installed the infinity 4 inch in the hole and siliconed around them and they sound great. I had the recovered and you cannot tell they are not bose except they sound better. You don't have to have the 5 inch for it to sound good. Mine look stock and I also use infinity 4x6 infinity plates in the dash and the sound up front is awesome. Don't underestimate the smaller speakers. I use all kenwood equipment (new deck and older amps) and infinity speakers. Very happy with my sound. I use 6.5s in the rear bose deck plate. I use the 91-92 bose deck plates since you can use the bigger speakers. The 87-90 bose rear decks use smaller speakers and smaller air boxes.

Re: Aftermarket Speakers in Bose Kick Panels
I put 3 1/2" Infinity Reference speakers in mine. One side was deep enough to accept the speaker without modification and the other side needed a hole in the back to get the magnet through so it would close. This defeats the sealed box atmosphere and you loose a ton of mid and low notes, however, how much mid and lows does a 3 1/2" speaker put out?
Havn't heard it yet since the car doesn't run but I had these laying around and was not happy with the Bose kicks.
