cost of a decent sound system??

how much would an average custom sound system put me back? Something not to crazy and not too crappy.

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

What are you considering as "Sound system"? Just upgrading the headunit and speakers, or sub and amp as well? Do you plan on amping the speakers, or running them off the headunit power?

It works better if you give a budget and then we design the system for you, or tell you if you need to increase your budget.

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

$500 is going to be kinda slim pickings, but can be doable. stick with a single quality sub instead of multiple cheaper subs. buying the sub amp used would help make things a bit more manageable in the money department. if you can skip the rear speakers, you could upgrade to a basic component/kick panel setup and blow away those 4x6s. theres lots of deals to be found out there (often on ebay), but a lot of it is a waiting game. take a look over at diymobileaudio.com for some leads on good stuff for cheap.

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

in the course of time i probably spent about $800, thats all used stuff though, if it was new it would have been a hell of a lot more.. $500 is tough to work with but is doable i believe

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

it all depends on what you want too. there are sites out there that sell cheaper quality amps and subs that you could probibly get a decent sub, amp, box, and wires for around $300.00. this will not be a set up for competition but if you mach the out put power of the amp and sub in both peak and RMS it should sound good. i do agree with the idea of a single sub set-up. it may not look as cool but it will give you the same quality of sound with only half the space taken up. in short there is no definate answer. its all opinion on what sounds good and what you need.

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

Definitely take a look at www.mach5audio.com for the subwoofer, be it a 10" or 12". As far as amps and the rest, eBay may be your best bet.

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

for sub i would get the alpine Type R, just need one sub they hit really hard, you can find them on ebay for about $120, Apline makes nice decks check them out too on ebay. ebay is great place to buy stuff but be warned, there is a reason why guys at TGO call it evilbay

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

there is no reason not to shop on ebay, you just need to be an educated consumer as with anything. i've made plenty of purchases for a variety of vehicle and non-vehicle related items with little to no issues. plenty of good deals to be found out there if you know how to look.

if you've got a budget you need to confine yourself to, you're gonna have limitations. my current system cost me over a grand evene with some bargain hunting.

eDesigns is a great up-coming company and there are quite a few more brands like them to be found online. I think the only thing "name brand" in my last few systems has been my deck (pioneer premier 880prs). My current setup consists of Mach 5 & Vifa speakers, Ample amps, and an Ascendant Audio sub. your best bet with finding some of these kind of brands is reading car audio-specific websites like previously mentioned.

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

Everybody's idea of "good" is different, so everybody's "budget" system would be different too. If sound quality is your goal, I usually say that roughly $700 is what you need for a full range system with good sound quality.

Figure about $100 for front speakers. Unfortunately, as long as you keep the stock 4x6 location (which is basically necessary on a budget system), you're going to be limited.

Single good quality 10" sub, roughly $100.

Decent 4 channel amp to power the 4x6s and the sub, roughly $250.

Sub enclosure, $50 done yourself, $150 for a pro.

Head unit, $150 (any simple brand name unit will do a much better job than a cheesy brand with a million unneeded features).

Wiring kit, misc. installation items, $50.

$700-800, give or take. Don't overlook an opportunity to save money on used equipment though.

If all you want is bass, it's easier. Just buy some Dr. Krankencrap or other nonsense brand subwoofer cabinet with a pair of neon colored 12s, and buy the matching amp. $200 and you can make your mirrors shake.

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

i recommend mach 5 audio to anyone on a budget because ive heard awesome things about them.. im even thinking about running one of their 10s.. or maybe one of there 8's, i think they have 8s

I personally bought all my stuff used because i dont have a problem with that and never really had any bad luck with it.. never had anything bad from ebay just make sure like said before you watch who the seller is and everything

type r's do hit hard and are pretty cheap i also considered a type r 10 as my next system

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

Unless you're talking about their top line sub, there's a lot out there for equal or lesser money that will do a better job. JL's good, but not the end all, be all in equipment.

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

It can get kind of expensive. Stock speakers will do, but a stock head unit is under powered. If your going for subs than JL's are nice and my brother has 2 10" subs in his full size 92 blazer, they sound great. A good amp is about $300 in my opinion, and stay away from off-brand items like pyle or pyramid and such. IMO, pioneer makes the best head units if u have a sound system. Those head units have a higher, more precise, volume control. plus they have a crap load of settings for subs and ampage and all that good stuff.... all in all... I for a "decent" sound system, I wouldnt spend more than a grand if you want durability and reliability out of an average/above average sounding system.

Re: cost of a decent sound system??

I'm converting my '92 Z28 into a track car, so the whole interior is now gone. I have an alpine cd player and a Kenwood amp that came out of the car that I'm trying to find a new home for. PM me if you're interested, it will fit well within your budget and leave you cash for speakers and such.
