What OEM Chevy/GM decks Fit 3rd Gens

I'm looking to replace my factory 87 cassette deck with a factory cd deck. I need to know if anyone here has tried using a OEM GM CD deck and if it fits without modifications...(Ie Tahoe or possibly 4th gen...)

Search provided no results...

Thanks

The Tahoe deck will require fabbing up something for a mounting bracket. GM truck radios use a slide mount which will have to be removed (they are actually attached to the bottom plate) I have a Theft-Lock CD player in my 89 RS that came from a 2002 GM truck. The one from a 4th gen should mount without modification.

You can use a factory delco mosoon unit. They use the same type of front mounting plate. It is the same radio as the trucks but without the slide mount. Check out my cardomain page, this is the same head that is in my car.

seriously, this is awesome. could there be a sticky on what units fit and with how much modification. this would be awesome. a car thief would look into your car and think it is a stock cd player but to you it wouldn't be and you would be able to listen to CD's.

I got it in yesterday and it sounds way better. I have to say that was by far the easiest install I've ever done...

I ordered the harnesses from www.installer.com since the Monsoon deck I bought did not come with the harness. The part number is 71-1858. It snaps right in the deck. Then I used the 70-1677-1 to snap into the factory male connectors. Every wire on the Metra harnesses is an exact match and they are even labeled in very small letters in case you lose the packaging.

I used 3m 16 guage butt splices to make sure I had good connections.

Plug everything in to make sure it works and then button it back up. This deck plays all my burned cd's as well...

Factory look and CD sound without cutting a single wire. I'm a happy camper. I'm keeping my stock 5 band eq cassette deck packed away for safe keeping...

As long as you burn with CD-R's you will be fine, just remember that if you go to buy more blank cd's CD-RW's will not play

Re: What OEM Chevy/GM decks Fit 3rd Gens

Was the monsoon easy to install after the wiring was done? Did it just bolt up or did you need to do some trimming? I was just wondering cause I might go to the junk yard and find something kinda the same for my car. I still say this should be a sticky! STICKY THIS!

Re: What OEM Chevy/GM decks Fit 3rd Gens

What happens when the theftlock kicks in and asks for some kind of code?

this happened with a 97 Camaro CD player my friend was putting into his 87 Camaro. Radio was locked so he sold it to me cheap.

I put it into my brothers 96 Trans Am and it turned on and worked perfect

Re: What OEM Chevy/GM decks Fit 3rd Gens

This is a post i start a little while ago.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/car-...-identify.html

within one of the posts is a link that will take you to owner's manuals for all 1993-2002 Firebirds and Camaros. That will instruct you on how to use the Theft Lock. I picked up two pontiac cd players with harnesses, one from a 99 and one from a 00. Both worked (no trimming or modification), all i had to do was take the original harness out of the doner car and go to walmart and spend something like $7 for the harness that plugs into my car so i don't have to cut anything. Works perfectly, sounds a lot better. As far as if it's already locked i can't help you. But if you wish to activate your theft lock as i did, then you will be able to use the owner's manuals and go through the instructions. I think it's something like section 3-19 or there about. Good luck!
----------
Zepher...if you shut off the car and it still blinks of the theft lock, you may want to turn it back on and either deactivate the system temporarily or reassign the security code so that you know the code. As mentioned the instructions above should be able to assist you.

Re: What OEM Chevy/GM decks Fit 3rd Gens

Do any of the newer Delco radios have an audio input on the back? I friggin LOVE my Zune and I can't imagine driving around without it. If not, it there an easy way to fab an input up? Maybe patch into the antenna or something? I installed my aftermarket head unit, but clearly I'm no expert...

Re: What OEM Chevy/GM decks Fit 3rd Gens

There is an auxiliary input normally for a slave cassette or CD player. They use the 9-pin connector on the back of the radio. Harnesses can be had to interface other sources, but most require the slave unit be present and powered on. I've heard of one harness available that doesn't require the slave unit, but I haven't been able to find one.

Peripheral has a variety of interface harnesses and other products. They are also proud of them, but most are good quality.

Re: What OEM Chevy/GM decks Fit 3rd Gens

The 99 style blazers had a divorced cassette deck from the CD player, which used the 9 pin input on the back of the radio. My buddy has been trying to get it to run without the cassette deck so he can run his radio stuff out of the factory speakers, but it proved to be too much of a hassle so he uses the speakers out of his base station.

When I go to the junkyard and I find owners manuals in the junkers I usually tear out the section with the cd player instructions. It tells you how to activate and deactivate the theftlock feature along with how to operate the unit itself.I have a whole pile of these laying around here
