Re: sound system

I've got a plan for my system , I've decided to run 6.5" kappa perfect components in the sail panels , I know I'll need to build adapters but I really wont need the bass of a 6 x 9 once I have the sub and personally a 6.5" round speaker sounds more crisp and clear to me .
I'm also going to build my own kick panels with the same 6.5" infinity kappa perfect component speakers in them , the dash speakers are going to be infinity kappa 4 x 6 plates .
I've been thinking about building a sealed enclosure for a single 10" mtx sub , I've weighed the multiple problems of space in our cars and decided to build the sub enclosure to occupy only half of the "trunk" ( the only hole worthy of that name ) .
If I build a amp rack next to the sub enclosure ( but not connected to it in any way ) I could run one large wire from the battery to the rear and then have a distribution block to feed each of the 4 amps , I think the largest heat producing amp should be mounted on top and the smallest amp on the bottom ( convection principal ) I'm planning on building some type of square duct down one side and mounting a fan to circulate air to the bottom ( I've seen a squirel cage fan on ebay that will work perfectly ) also I want a cap somewhere in the rack and a cover to hide it all from the thieving low lifes in my neighborhood .
The amps themselves are going to be a mix of brands , I'll go with fosgate's to power the 6.5" and a mtx to power the sub but I haven't decided on the amp for the dash speakers yet .
I've only just began to gather components so I'm still open to ideas and suggestions but this is my current plan , oh and I got a big roll of fatmat just waiting on warmer weather

Sounds nice and you are very right on the 6x9 vs 6.5! However if funds available I would do components in the front and rear. Maybe a 4" in the dash. Get Alpine Digital amps and keep the idea of the trunk. See the digital amps don't over heat in fact they dont even warm up. No fans needed. also they are very small and mount together. I plan on putting mine behind the drivers rear lock box. Then building a stage 2 bandpass box. meaning the sub will be inside the box and unseen. Only thing seen is the 2"x 8" port hole. Carpet it all and i'm done.

Oh and you can buy these amps in 4x100, 4x150,1x600,1x1000 and they are all the same size. A little price but shop around. They are much easyer on your cars electrical than A/B or even D amps. and have dumie proof quick fittings.

Oh yeah and the reason i said components is cuz then you can run the fronts together the dash and the kicks at 2. and still set the crossovers on the compontent and a inline crossover. that way you don't need 3 amps only 2.

Re: sound system

Back to the topic at hand , I'm running kicker 2 way 6 x 9's in the sail panels now , They sound terrible without a amp but if you throw the watts at them they come alive .... but they are very bass'ie and would work great for a car without a sub . I have a kenwood head unit that I'm very happy with and it's very versitile but even tweeking the EQ the 6 x 9's have a hole where the midrange should be .
Just my opinion but I have a pretty good ear , good luck and keep us posted .

Even the best speakers....Like a component 3way Dynaudio or focal are nothing like subs. In fact even subs are not all equal many don't even have the frequency response! I agree that a good 6X9 will sound good in the midbass. However remove it and install even a free air 7"-8" there and see the difference. there is a reason SLP class cars have a awsome set of components up front and maybe a small 8" or 10" in the rear. But no rear speakers. And about 3 times the watts it needs! Not tying to split hairs here.
Midbass is one of the hardest frequencies to get.

Re: sound system

Now, I'm not here saying that I'm some sort of expert on car audio, but I have been working with my father-in-law in his shop, Loud & Clear Car Audio. He has been installing and working with car audio since 1980, almost 30 years. His personal favorite speakers come from Exile Car Audio. He currently has the XT65 6.5" speakers, and one XP12. I'm not sure of his deck though. He highly recommends the Pioneer DEH-P400UB. It is by far the best deck in that price range ($160). I would suggest if you have the cash for Exile, get it. If not, get Titanium Power. Titanium Power is super cheap parts that are still good quality. Titanium Power is basically Wal-Mart prices with MUCH better quality.
