Alpine Type R 12" Subs

I've decided to add some subs to my system and i think i'm going with two alpine 12" type r's but i'm new to audio and really can't decide on an amp to power them. Any suggestions for the amp or even opinions on the subs would be appreciated. Also, i listen to mostly metal and occasionally classic rock and 80's metal....would two 12's be overpowering? I want the subs to be able to have good punch and volume, but i don't want my music to become all bass.

Re: Alpine Type R 12" Subs

I have 2 MTX 12s and I listen to the same type of music as you. It won't be all bass, you can control the level of the subs. But you should upgrade the other speakers too because they make most of the sound. Upgrading the front speakers and addin an amp will give you the biggest improvment in sound, then add your subs. For a sub amp I am running a 1000WRMS mono-block, any of the quality brand mono-blocks will give you plenty of grunt. The other thing is to make sure you build a really solid box, don't go ported, we don't have the room for a ported boxed for 2 12s. A sealed well box will give you the best sound. Here's a pic of mine for inspiration

here's a pic of it when it was nearly finished, to show you the shape

Ok thanks that sounds like what i had in mind. By the way i have my deck and speakers upgraded already, i just need to get an amp for them as well. You've got a really good looking box, but how difficult is it to build one? I've heard different things from different people. I was planning on just buying one, but it would be great to have a custom fit in the trunk like that.

Re: Alpine Type R 12" Subs

I just got the plans for the well box that are on this site (check the measurements, they are close but not perfect) Then I made the top out of MDF with the spacers needed for the magnets to clear, then I fibreglassed the top and sanded it. Then I covered it, it's not too hard really and it is heaps cheaper than getting one made or buying a premade box.

The Alpine R is a really good quality sub and worth the money.

Two 12" might be too much. You would probably end up turning down the gains on the amp.

One sub would work well and still leave you some trunk room. Even a single 10" will deliver loads of bass. If you decide to run one sub you could buy one amp to run all the speakers in your car.

Ok one 12" looks like it will be fine like you said...but i have one more question about the amp. Wouldn't it be better/cheaper to get an amp for the sub and a separate amp for the other speakers? This amp seemed like a good choice but it might be a little overkill. http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...500PDX5&tp=115
Sorry that i don't know much about this stuff but i can't really find the info that i'm looking for.
