So, I searched this and there isnt a lot to go on. I want to mount a 15in square Solar Baric (L7/L5???) in the maro. The idea of inversion attracted me because of the ability to use a smaller box. I want to the box to be very easily removable because I dont need bumps all the time and I definitly dont want the weight. My questions are, how much smaller (cubic feet) box can I use this way? Also, I read on here that you hook up the wiring reversed , could someone explain this? The sub is Dual Voice Coil (DVC), so I'm a bit confused as to how this wired up in relation to the reversed wiring.

The specs state that the minimum sealed enclosure (traditional mount) is 1.6 cubic feet.

Inverting the sub isn't going to make "that" much difference.....but if you do invert it, the wiring needs to be 180 degrees out of phase.

To do that on a single voice coil subwoofer you need to attach the (+) from the amp to the (-) of the woofer and the (-) from the amp to the (+) on the woofer....this will make the woofer move out of phase....

But I'm assuming your subwoofer is a dual voice coil speaker? Are you running a single sub in series or parallel?

 

the l7s and l5s dont come in a svc config.. dont worry too much about inverting phase.. technically you would want to reverse phase (swap pos and neg) on both subs, but you would likely not hear much difference regardless.

as for box size difference.. you would be looking at less than .2 cu ft difference per driver honestly...

 

The driver is an L7, and it is DVC. (Dual Voice Coil)

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but if I have read correctly above; I am to come from my amp to the driver with negative-to-postive, and positive-to-negative?

If this is correct, in what way do I hook up the other voice coil?

I'm doing a single driver encloser. I am aware that I am not saving much in the way of size or weight. I've had 10's and 12's of all varietys, this is somthing different I wanted to try.

That depends on your amp and the ohm rating of the voice coils. What are each voice coil rated at? 4ohms or 2ohms each?

What amp are you using......were you going to bridge the amp or run it in stereo?

Because you have a choice of series or parrallel wiring .......depending on the above.

 

Wow, I was under the impression that I was literate on this subject. Well, first and foremost I'll get the ID# off the sub and identify the voice coil ohms rating.

As for my amp, I think I will be slightly underpowered so I will probably be bridging.

If you guys could educate me on this I would be so grateful. I've had many systems before but they were always "2 driver" configurations. So I would just hook it up stereo. I was unaware that a single sub could be hooked up in stereo. Would you just run your two channel amp, with one channel to each coil? This is an area of expertise that I would love to explore. You could even point me in the direction of a Tech. article if need be.

one thing I would like to add about this. you are right with being able to use a smaller box as the speaker now isn't taking away from the displacement of the box but the one catch is overall reversing it to where the speaker instead poked out of the box is you are going to end up with a larger setup that way. see what happens is the speaker itself might only take up lets just say .2cubic foot of space as far as how much air it will dispalce but the problem is how much room it takes up is another story it it might take up lets say an extra cubic foot.

 

He's right, unless you have mutiple speakers and they are out of phase
with each other; then you have cancellation issues.

Speakers produce pressure waves by moving air. If one speaker is pushing
(creating a compression wave), and the other speaker is pulling in (creating
an expansion), then the result will be subtractive.

With a single speaker set up, you may gain better performance if you invert
the wire phasing due to how the pressure waves bounce aronud inside your
car.

A sound wave that bounces off the back window and then toward your
ear will arrive at a different time than a direct wave. If the pressure waves
are out of phase, the sound will be perceived as weak by your ear.

You can actually hear and feel this sensation better in a home setting.

Take your stereo speakers and place them at least six feet apart and
sit between them. Have a friend swap the leads on one speaker as a
song is playing.

Depending on the song, and room you will be able to feel a weird sensation
in one of your ears when the speakers are incorrectly wired. If yuo don't
feel it/hear it, tilt your head, or move it forward/backward slightly until
you are in a 'cancellation zone'.

I will only be using one driver, so I wont have any cancellative losses via running two drivers in opposite phase.

I need only know the wiring in this case. I understand that in a reversed mounting situation, I will need to reverse the wiring (+/- as opposed to +/+). I also understand that with a two channel amp I can run one channel to each VC, as long as I wire them alike. The question I need answered is that if I decide to bridge my amp to one channel and hook it to just one VC (reversed), what oreintation will my jumper wires be in (from one VC to the other).

The voice coils will be wired similarly (in phase with each other).

The easiest way is to flip the wires at the amp, and leave the coils alone.

That analogy might make it easier to understand...and it's less work too!
