battery power for audio equip
hi have a question, i have 4 10"subs, 2 monitors, 3 amps, navigation, ps2, and whole lot of other crap in there. im running 2 redtop oltima batteries, 1 for engine and acces in engine bay. 1 in the trunk of the car for audio. 140amp powermaset alternator. i would like to have that 2nd battery in trunk for just audio and that stuff for car shows. how can i connect it to the 1st battery under hood, so its getting rechared when car is running. but not taking away power when car is off and just working off trunk battery? someone told me about an iscolator or something like that? and heard not to use one. Thanks

I run two batteries also, both yellow tops. I have them connected to a diode type isolator which lets the alternator charge each as needed. Other than the isolator, the batteries have no connection in common. My isolator is made by Phoenix Gold when they made them, I've had it for a number of years now. You would probably be able to find something similar in an RV supply store since motor homes and such use separate batteries to run hotel loads such as interior lights.
This is my isolator and 140 amp alternator, the 4th smaller post (required for our alternators) is for excitation and needs a switched 12V.

The circuit looks like this, the fuse on the front battery is optional.

Also, Isolator/Combiners can be found here - http://www.hellroaring.com/

yep that's what i run with two yellow tops. 3,000 watts and air ride the battery is shot after 10 minutes of playing at a show. you can also get a box to set it up for direct 120v plug in for when you are at shows also which is really nice feature. have yet to do that but it's in the works this winter.

I have a single boat battery and a 230amp alternator and I have no problems and I have 1800 and 1200 amp and run the electric fan all the time and at idle it will produce about 110amps. I will add another battery later but not with out a isolater but for now im good.

i have 2 yellow tops in my rs, i ran 2 gauge from the front battery, to the back, where i have the 2nd yellow top, with a charging relay in the 2 gauge line, its made by stinger, the only thing i dont like is you have to run an additional ignition 12v (+) to it, being as that is what makes the connection when the key is turned
